Brüno (Bruno)
R
Bruno mostly offended people because he was violating their private space with his crass sexual overtness. People don't like yucky sexual things thrust in their face. He had little sense that he was causing offense. There weren't any Bruno encounters with the real Gay Community, I betcha they'd react the same way. It was a bit hard to tell what reactions were genuine and what were staged. Most of the episodes went on too long. My favourite were the scenes with Baby O.J., especially when they got their luggage at the airport. The biggest fools were the Hollywood parents who would allow their kids to do anything for stardom. I suspect when he visited Palestine and Israel, things got quite dangerous for real. I think this movie was made too soon after Borat, so it lost a lot of its shock value. The fight with Straight Dave was funny, especially how the crowd reacted when things turned. The song at the end with all the British singers was great. Be sure to watch all the deleted scenes on the DVD for more hilarity.
House on Haunted Hill
R
The "House" had really great atmosphere and layout, with its myriad of haunted deathtraps. The set designers did a great job. But it wasn't really a house; it was a mental institution, so points are lost there. I never got how a place abandoned for so long could have functioning electricity and water. The blood and gore effects were cool. I liked the characters. There were nice nods to the original with Jeffrey Rush's "Mr. Price" character doing a nice Vincent Price tribute, plus the guns in the little coffin boxes. The murderous marital dispute got a bit tired. I liked all the guests in the house and thought all the actors did a good job. The poor CGI shadow monster was terribly done; it's asymmetrical form and blending made it look badly overlaid, even for 1999 CGI effects. The other ghosts were effectively creepy, notably Jeffrey Combs as Dr. Vannacutt. The movie wasn't scary, but it was a fun amusement-park sort of ride.

Toys
PG-13
Probably my favorite film of all time. It has great art direction, video game action, Robin Williams comedy and an awesome soundtrack. Favorite Scenes: the surrealist fake MTV video to distract the guards, and when the toy tanks break down the door and begin the battle against the good toys - with "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" re-mixed version playing.
TRON
PG
TRON - I love thee! The greatest videogame movie ever, and probably the best movie from the 1980's. Disney did something weird and made a thoughtful film. I liked how the citizens of the computer world had real world counterparts. There was a pseudo-religion in the TRON world to believe in the greater forces beyond. There were probably many in-jokes to the smaller sector of computer programmers back then; so I'd say this movie was ahead of its time. The layered optical effects to make the models and actors circuitry glow, was unique. I wish I saw it on the big screen to fully appreciate its production design. This fueled a wave of great arcade and home videogame products which enhanced the 80's generation. The powerful and beautiful electronic score by Wendy Carlos made the movie into a lifting experience. The 20th Annivesary DVD (not pictured) is a wonderful way to re-live this film. Favorite Scene: When the MCP explodes and all the I/O towers light up
