| Coraline - PG |
I have to admit that this movie wasn't quite as dark or disturbing as I expected / hoped, but it still came out pretty good. It's not quite the best in terms of stop animation films but still pretty good. I liked how the stop motion animation seemed almost deliberately shakey or something - given all the use of CGI these days, it felt like the animators were reminding us that this was really stop motion animation and not all CGI made to look like stop motion. I suppose the smoothness of technology has a lot of us craving for simpler, rougher times. There was a definite attempt to make sure kids could watch the movie, which is probably why it seemed a lot tamer than it was in the book / graphic novel. Still, the imagery was wonderfully vivid and it certainly made for an entertaining rainy afternoon. |

This movie turned out to be a lot better than I thought it would be - this is totally what it means to bring anime-style storytelling to life in a live-action movie. Sure, it's not a movie meant to be taken seriously and it's filled with crazy characters, odd humor and even more ridiculous hairstyles. But that's Korean film making for you and just have to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride for what it's worth. |

| Dan in Real Life - PG-13 |
This is not your typical Steve Carell comedy, which is probably why I liked the movie. It's not about over the top comedy, extremely awkward situations or mindless physical comedy. It's just an interesting look at something which really can happen (and probably has) and given how grounded in reality it comes across. It had it's share of great moments, funny moments, awkward instances and naturally dragging sort of pointless moments, but it's really a slightly more serious romantic comedy of sorts, so that's just par for the course. It's still a pretty entertaining film, a different kind of romance film to see and a nice way to spend any lazy afternoon. |
