| Nim's Island - PG |
This movie turned out to be a lot better than I expected, but not by much. While clearly stuck in the realm of it being a chidren's movie, it certainly made an attempt to be more. I liked the mix of fantasy with reality but there were key pieces where the action seemed limited or the fantasy parts were held back or entire plot threads which could have been much better exploited. Points go to Jodie Foster for believably acting like an eccentric agoraphobic, although I still wish her character had a lot more to do than she did. Still, it's a nice film for a lazy Sunday afternoon. |

| The Chronicles of Riddick - Unrated |
This film is worlds away from Pitch Black before it and was clearly an attempt by the creators to capitalize on the popularity of Vin Diesel's character from the first film. Suddenly we have this huge universe to play in and a much greater role / destiny for Riddick well beyond how the character was originally conceived. It's decent entertainment but definitely wasn't that successful in elevating itself into higher science fiction as was clearly the intent. I doubt we'll see anything beyond this edition of the franchise unless the filmmakers get greedy and just hope to create another movie to draw in ticket sales. |

| Pitch Black - R |
I initially kept away from this movie since I wasn't really that into Vin Diesel. It wasn't until I heard more about it and it's strong sci-fi nature that I eventually became interested. Pitch Black is an homage to many movies before it, in some ways. You can see influences of science fiction greats like Aliens and even touches of Dune. The whole thing is pretty much the survival-horror concept placed on an alien planet, but done rather well. Sure, the story wasn't all that filled out but that's not the point it's sometimes how little you know that drives things. I understand now why this turned into a multi-feature franchise. |
