| Sydney White - PG-13 |
This movie turned out to be a lot better than expected (or not as bad as feared). While it remains a trite adaptation of the classic tale of Snow White, the translation was pretty decent and the story managed to retain enough water to have its own story even if you ignore the Snow White references. Of course the story is your typical teen Amanda Bynes type of story, so that's not saying much. Still, if you want a light movie for a lazy Sunday night, this just might fit the bill. |

| G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra - PG-13 | This really felt like a cartoon translated into a live-action movie. Sure, the plot was weak and the antics were often cheesy and childish, but that's the point! This was a movie that celebrated its campiness and understood the limitations of its genre and pretty much embraced it. Finally! Some original film making! District 9 is exactly the kind of movie (science fiction or otherwise) that we need more of. Not another sequel, prequel or remake but something that's not just original but well-written and wonderfully executed. Sure, it's a blatant retelling of the events of District 6 many years ago but the translation to an alien-related setting managed to work remarkably well. |

It turned out better than I thought it would be considering I just went to see it because of Ryan Reynolds shirtless / naked - what better reason could there be? Oh yeah, story, right. Well it was pretty decent and believable, as far as romantic comedies go. The movie just goes on to prove that (1) Sandra Bullock is still rather hot for her age, (2) Ryan Reynolds really shouldn't wear clothes and (3) Betty White is more than capable of stealing the show. Yay for more Ryan Reynolds movies! |

| Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - PG |
As a transition story piece between the prior books and its ultimate conclusion in book 7, this 6th installment of the Harry Potter franchise came out as a decent translation when brought to film but doesn't quite stand out compared to the movies before it. The radical shift in tone of the former mix of fantasy and wonder with the confrontation with evil towards the end has been replaced with a very, very dark world all throughout the movie, which probably made it boring for some. The actors did rather well and have certainly grown and overall David Yates did the best he could in terms of translating as much of the key parts of the book into film without sacrificing too much. Some plot points weren't carried to the end all that well, especially the one about the Half-Blood Prince, but that can't be helped given all that had to be accomplished. Oh, and Freddie Stroma is really hot. Rawr! |
