Repo! The Genetic Opera - R This turned out to be a lot better than I expected. Sure, the movie is a tad on the campy side, but what musical isn't right? Think of it as a modern update of musicals like Sweeney Todd or Rocky Horror and one in which you can actually stand Paris Hilton's performance to boot!

Plus, Anthony Head was pretty interesting out of his typical nice guy / mentor role.

Definitely, Maybe - PG-13 I know, I know, I'm a sucker for Ryan Reynolds movies, even romantic comedies and warm and fuzzy pieces like this. Still, this was definitely one of the better ones that remained very entertaining and not overly predictable as is the case for most romantic comedies.

Plus he doesn't take off his shirt, which is a good and bad thing. Good since you know it's not just about him being eye candy and he gets to really throttle up the charm. Bad since I like the eye candy aspect, haha

School of Life - Unrated I was surprised to see Ryan Reynolds in a film like this when I caught it on Star Movies so I decided to give it a shot just for the heck of it. It had all the trappings of a made-for-TV movie - the family-friendly plot, the overwhelming use of movie cliches and all that, but in the end it wasn't that bad.

Sure, Reynolds plays the classic "cool" teacher who changes the school culture because of his creative and unconventional methods and more traditional stick-in-the-mud teachers like Paymer's character try to resist the changes.

But then the way the story was told in terms of occasional narration from the son of the old school teacher (pardon the pun) and all the costumes they stick Reynolds in held flesh out the story and give it its unique spin.

On the whole it was a surprisingly good movie and a nice way to spend a random Sunday afternoon at home.

Gamer - R Definitely not as fun as I had hoped it would be, it had its share of fun moments in terms of depicting MMORPGs as real life experiences, but beyond that the story started to falter. The ending was rather half-baked to boot.

Action sequences were great though, albeit a tad bloody here and there. Still, it's not that bad a movie to explore if you're into on-screen violence and action.

The Spirit - PG-13 I felt the movie certainly had a lot of potential but sort of fumbled when it came to execution. It was constantly trying to figure out whether it wanted to be a serious movie or a campy homage to 1940's comics. One can't help but blame Frank Miller's direction for the lack of focus in terms of depiction.

Kudos to Gabriel Macht for managing to be hot in this movie, though. It's the mask I tell you!

Unbreakable - PG-13 While I'm not an M. Night fan, this movie seemed surprisingly good - perhaps because it was one of his earlier works fresh from The Sixth Sense or something. Camera shots were interesting and the movie managed to pull off a more realistic / modern superhero story without the flashy origin stories, special effects or campy humor. September 13, 2009
