My Sassy Girl is just one of those cult classics that everyone talks about, everyone swears to have seen and yet for some reason I never got around to watching. I guess it's because I'm just not that into romantic comedies and were it not for my Archer forcing me to watch it, I probably would have gone through life not having seen it. It was okay, and well-crafted enough, I have to give it that. I guess my main challenge with such films is how predictable they can be, but this one had a lot of good-humored gimmicks that certainly made the movie go better. I dunno if I'd see it again on my own, though, but that's me. |

| Burn After Reading - R |
Given this was a Coen Brothers creation starring Frances McDormand to boot, I couldn't help but get a very strong Fargo feel from the entire thing. Don't get me wrong, it's still a pretty good movie but in a way it just seemed like a rehash of a lot of the things that made Fargo good but now in the context of the CIA and the whole spying thing. Brad Pitt did a decent job of playing an idiot gym trainer and McDormand did a good job of being...her character in Fargo, but now with a different accent. And John Malkovich did a great job of being John Malkovich. |

| City of Ember - PG |
Given I had never read the books, I entered this movie thinking it was just another young adult novel hastily turned into a movie by Hollywood. Instead I was surprised to find a film with remarkable depth while remaining focused on a younger audience driven by a rather strong plot that was more science fiction than anything else. It's not going to win any awards but it's still a nice enjoyable film, especially if you're into well thought-out adventure mysteries. |

| 17 Again - PG-13 |
Admittedly, we watched this just to satisfy my desire to watch Zac Efron despite the fact that the plot looked pathetic, the story predictable and the concept overdone. The redeeming factor of this movie was more of the geeky best friend subplot and those creepy cougar moments between Zac Efron and his "wife" in the movie despite the gap. Otherwise, it was as bad as I expected given he didn't even fulfill my original reason for watching the movie - he never took his shirt off. |

Think of all the great things about the comic books in terms of Wolverine. Throw in all the things you wish for in terms of comic book character cameos in movies, possible action sequences and all that good stuff. Lastly, think of how stories are supposed to make sense, how plot threads are supposed to unfold and how the real world works. None of that happened. Instead you get the complete opposite and yet another example of how Hollywood will bastardize any franchise in order to fulfill the mindless whims of the producers or to just create a movie that matches their "market research" expectations. |

| The Fall - R |
I owe my friend Tobie so much for introducing me to this film. Based on the synopsis alone, I wasn't very interested but when I finally sat down to watch this striking piece, I was pretty overwhelmed. Given the same genius behind the rather disturbing images of The Cell was at work here, it explains a lot about why things looked the way they did. It's certainly a feast for the eyes that keeps you wondering what is going to happen next, and not just in terms of story events. But the overall story itself was a lot more cohesive than The Cell. That movie was more like a acid trip that tapped into our darkest nightmares where this film had a deliberate story and even as the images got more and more surreal, there was a definitely purpose to things. Perhaps I'm just comforted more by the semblance of linearity at work here. Bonus points for Lee Pace appearing in this film. I already love him because of Pushing Daisies and he certainly shows he's a lot more flexible as an actor. This is definitely worth sitting down for if you have any respect for using all elements of a film to the fullest. |

A movie about love and the power of destiny in our lives - the story may seem simplistic (and almost "Filipino"), but the message is hardly shallow. This is the kind of movie that develops new meaning with repeat viewings and certainly as you gain new experiences in life. Kudos to Danny Boyle for a strong return to the film scene with his thought-provoking piece. |
