There are few things that I enjoy more then a trip to "Almodovarland". A place where the lines between past and present are always a little blurred. Where the visual style is always a colorful melange of retro-modern details.
And the women...oh the women are always a delight to watch. Here too the lines blur, but with the women the lines are those between staunch determination and utter insanity. And whichever side of the line that these ladies fall, they are always a pleasure to watch. Full of humor, passion and love.
With Volver, Penelope Cruz really gets to show the world what she can do. She is both breathtaking to look at and her performance here is both heartbreaking an at times heartwarming. And as is his style Pedro has surrounded her with a cast of brilliant actors (some new faces and some old favorites) and together they are brilliant.
The story is the usual combination of absurd chracters in crazy situations held together by strained familial ties that (to spite their quirky absurd nature) are oddly relatable, because so often they are more close to reality then we care to admit.
Not to be missed for Almodovar fans.

Recently re-watched this and I must begin by saying to anyone who hasn't seen it: please don't let the recent mass marketing of this film (or more specifically images from this film) discourage you from seeing it with an open mind.
It is first and foremost, very much a Capote novel. Underneath all of the crazy romantic scenarios, silly antics, bizzare characters and clever dialog, it is quite a dark and slightly disconcerting story.
Having said that, it is also very much the quintessentia Audrey Hepburn vehicle. Without her grace, beauty and charm, this would be a VERY different (much darker) film. As a matter of fact she comes across as almost TOO polished and refined to actually be the character she is portraying...but she's so delightful to watch that you will find yourself forgiving that fact and enjoy the experience.
It really is a good film, with a great cast and a sountrack that is to die for.
