| L'uomo delle stelle (The Star Maker) (The Star Man) (Starmaker) - R |
Joe Morelli is a scoundrel who cheats illiterate sicilian villagers with dreams of stardom, shooting faux screen tests from town to town until unusual circumstances force his prosperous swindling business to end on sour note. Great performance by Sergio Castellitto, as an irascible demagogue who stirs up the masses. Arousing the wishes of peasants, criminals and officials, gaining tremendous popularity among them, especially in a young, beautiful and impressionable girl named Beata. Follows the same tread of "cinema paradiso" and though it can't reach the level of poetry and pathos of that film, it has wonderful moments too. |

| La Cabina (The Phone Box) (The Telephone Box) - Unrated | Masterpiece of Spanish cinema. Acid, surreal and terrifying. A holy trinity of Hitchcock, Kafka and Orwell would be proud. | November 7, 2009 | N/A | |||

I have complained many times before about unnecesary over stylization, but here the case is quite the contrary, as happens with that sensationalistic and pseudo intellectual dogma movement, there is nothing interesting in its mise en scene, no storytelling skill whatsoever displayed, so the story rather than being fully exploited becomes a mere recorded play with pitiful production values. The story had potential though it wasn't that great either. It feels stagy and shallow, as well as the performances, especially that from the lead actor. When you have something happening in a very limited space, you better do like Hitchcock in "rope" or Polanski in say "death and the maiden" and start leaving your mark on every shot, make it as intense and engaging as they did, 'cause if you don't you'll have a weak attempt of a feature film, tacky and dull, rather than making a convincing contribution to the annals of the "housebound" subgenre. |

| What? (Diary of Forbidden Dreams) - R |
Some sympathetic (in all its weirdness) moments can't save this messy alice in wonderland all'italiana, or a la polaski more exactly. I know the charm is supposed to be on its absurdist situations, but I just didn't find it funny, rather incredibly boring and uninsteresting. |

| Umberto D. - Unrated |
Director Vittorio De Sica and screenwriter Cesare Zavattini, show again their good sense and total mastery over pathos. Characters of exemplary moral standards who find themselves unjustly trapped inside a somber existence, condemned to indifference and oblivion. It's been quite a long time since I saw a film so beautiful, involving and heartbreaking. I'm not embarrassed to say I broke into tears at the finale. What a splendid achievement. |

| The Outsiders - PG |
Coppola's talent behind the camera is undeniable. I particularly like Ponyboy's memoirs at the theater after he sees "the hustler" and the "nothing gold can stay" moment with his partner Johnny. Although it is a big catalog of precious instants, I couldn't help but notice some uninspiring over sentimentality that made me roll my eyes a few times. Pity the story couldn't match the artistry of its images or its brilliant collection of old songs. |
