Training Day is famous for giving Denzel Washington a chance to be the bad guy, and all of the buzz about his award-winning performance was well deserved. A movie that basically centers on two people over the course of one day has to have strong performances from its stars, and W...( read more)ashington and Ethan Hawke both rise to the occasion.

The ending was a little trite and convenient (with a coincidence that asked for an incredible suspension of disbelief), but the rest of the movie was pretty good. Training Day raised a lot of questions about how much evil could be done to achieve the greater good, and whether it's acceptable to compromise your own morals, for an important cause. Those themes may not be completely new territory for crime dramas, but they are still worthwhile, when done well.

One of my favourite performances from Denzel Washington and a great corrupt undercover police story.

What a first Day!!! I really like the fact this all happened during one day, it added a realistc feel to it and a view to the escalating circumstances, whilst the characters ...( read more)grow throughout.

Not bad. Washington is great but Hawke is annoying. Turn off before switching on!

I've never heard the word "fuck" so many times in all my life. It was a gritty, realistic movie about what it must be like to work in narcotics.

Washington sees the light as Pacino and DeNiro have, that it's good to play the bad guy. Appropriately gritty, this even makes Ethan Hawke seem effective.

it was all over the place. so messy!

Some movies require a little patience,in order to achieve the maximum pleasure out of it!

on first view I discarded it as just another mafia-bad cop type of film(even though I was highly impressed by Denzel Washington's performance)

But if I reconsider my decision well it m...( read more)ade me change my review.

Like I said earlier Denzel washington plays a great baddie,Ethan hawke is also good in his role.

just one problem I felt was the movie's pace...may be if they could just make it a little low on details or whatever.

But neverthless watching it twice or thrice can affect my decision & i'm willing to give it a retry!

David Edelstein, Slate

Giving Alonso a melodramatic secret -- a reason for this particular behavior on this particular day -- trivializes the whole exercise. full review

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

While Training Day is a violent film, its brutality takes place in a believable moral universe and isn't just tossed in to give us a thrill. full review

Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail

Here's a cop drama with some brutal smarts, rather than dumb brutality and smart-alecky one-liners. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

For its kinetic energy and acting zeal, I enjoyed the movie. I like it when actors go for broke. full review

Claudia Puig, USA Today

With its unflinching style, Training Day can be hard to sit through at times. But it's worth the discomfort for the adrenaline rush of the plot and Washington's compelling performance. full review

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Washington, who just keeps getting better, is a sparking, snapping live wire in the role of Detective Sgt. Alonzo Harris. full review
