Dan White, George Moscone, Harvey Fierstein

Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in United States history, had been serving on San Francisco's Board of Supervisors only 11 months when he, along with Mayor George Moscone, was assas...( read more  read more... )sinated in 1978 by Dan White, a fellow supervisor disillusioned with the constant compromise of city politics and an opponent on gay-rights issues. Harvey Milk interweaves newsreel footage and personal interviews to construct a compelling portrait of these turbulent times: Milk's rise to prominence in the Castro; Moscone's emphasis on neighborhoods and the subsequent redistricting that allowed Milk to be elected; his successful fight against Senator John Briggs's inflammatory Proposition 6; the assassination; White's trial; and its violent aftermath. The most moving images depict the massive but reverential candlelight march that followed the shootings, a sharp contrast to the riots after White's infamous Twinkies-defense trial.

This Oscar-winning documentary is beautifully extraordinary. It's tragic and simply wonderful. Accurately symbolizes the generation that was changed by the political service of the first openly gay elected official. Harvey Milk was, is and always will be one of the most tragic fi...( read more)gures in the political history of the United States. His murderer, Dan White, also responsible for the murder of Mayor George Moscone, served only 5 years in jail for double homicide, simply because he was rich and white.

A quite superb documentary with an acute emotional spectrum unlike any other documentary I've ever seen.

An awesome documentary that does an amazing job of sucking you into it's web. It's hard to not find Harvey Milk a very lovable man of the people.

A gripping documentary about a rising political star whose life ended in tragedy. I wish it was more balanced with the interviews though. There was a trial and the verdict was depicted as unjust, and the only opinions the film gave were those of Milk's closest friends (who, of co...( read more)urse, would view the verdict as unjust). I was interested in the motives and the defense's argument of Dan White (the killer), but it didn't elaborate much on that. It's an interesting watch though.

i watched this after i saw the Sean Penn performance. all very interesting and a powerful subject... but i kept refering back to the movie. i would of liked to see more interviews with milk as you get less of a sense of the man from this film... though as a doc' maybe harvey milk...( read more) is just the vehicle for the ideals and movement that were highlighted on this instead.

    Very good documentary.

As strong and as informative a documentary as you would expect. It does an excellent job of explaining Harvey Milk's accomplishments, but it doesn't shy on the flawed side of him as well.
