Excellent movie. Great acting, great story - just awesome all the way around.

I have hardly ever seen a movie that is as good as the novel it is based upon, so I wasn't expecting this movie to be better than the novel. The story isn't as interesting in this movie, but the cast is great, the entertainment value is excellent, and veteran Director Francis For...( read more)d Coppola is behind the camera here. Coppola has directed movies like the epic mob masterpiece The Godfather and plenty of other great movies.

This was released a couple of weeks before Matt Damon's huge hit Good Will Hunting, so this is one of his first big roles in a movie. Danny De Vito does a great job in adding plenty of humor to the movie, and Jon Voight adds a lot of dramatic effect to his character.

The story follows a young lawyer who is representing the family of a boy with leukemia who could have had proper treatment, but couldn't because of a seedy insurance company. The movie pretty much follows the book, but the problem is that the book had a few great sub plots that seem absent from the movie, and one scene that happens in the middle of the movie happens in the end of the book. The scene is very intense, but it seems more like it belonged at the end of the movie, rather than the middle.

This is worth watching, it is one of the best Grisham films, and there are plenty of great qualities in it.

a really good film about a lawyer with morals in a world full of lawyers that lack them. amongst his cases are an elderly womans will, a young lady's domestic violence case and a mothers loss of a son due to an insurance company not paying out when he became ill. damon's characte...( read more)r (rudy baylor) forms close bonds and relationships with these people while trying his best to help them. he also has a sidekick played by danny devito (deck shifflet) who is as on form as he is in "l.a. confidential". he's a bit of a swindler and a bit of a rogue but he helps rudy with his cases when he needs some back-up as rudy is new to the game. this is their story. it mostly works due to the strong supporting cast. obviously damon and devito are seasoned actors but claire danes as the domestic violence victim, jon voight as leo the main defence lawyer for the insurance company, danny glover (of lethal weapon fame) as the 2nd judge after dean stockwell (quantum leap) gets out of the way for him, or even mickey rourke with small parts as bruiser who is the very shady but friendly lawyer at the head of rudy & deck's firm, are all outstanding back up for the main two actors. the other two strong points are that it's taken from a john grisham book, adapted to the screen and then directed by francis ford coppola. watch it. it's good

Let me get this known: John Grisham is a fried, unoriginal hack who slaps new titles on old material. Hopefully Coppola will avoid this same fate...or maybe not.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Based on the book by John Grisham.

Matt Damon plays Rudy Baylor, a recent law school graduate whose first case is against a big sleazy insurance company that refuses to pay benefits to a young man dying of leukemia. Jon Voight (Angelina Jolie's...( read more) dad) plays the high-priced lawyer defending the insurance company. Also starring Danny DeVito as Baylor's associate.

An eye-opening story about some of the shady practices in the insurance industry. Mostly faithful to Grisham's book. Voight and DeVito give great performances. Matt Damon's acting is rather flat, but he puts on a good southern accent! The movie does drag on a bit too long.
