The League members are staunch individualists, outcasts in fact, with checkered pasts and singular gifts that have been both blessing and curse. Now they must learn to trust each other and work as a team for the very hope of civilization. With little preparation and no time to lose, they will be transported via Captain Nemo's extraordinary submarine, the Nautilus, to the frontline of defense: Venice, Italy. There, a masked madman known as the Fantom plans to sabotage a conference of world leaders by setting off a domino chain of explosions, sinking the entire city. The threat is catastrophic, the risks are staggering. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen has 96 hours to save the world.

Poor old Alan Moore. No wonder he disassociated himself from Watchman!

This is poor stuff, it looks great, real effort in that department, the characters are great and look good and I love the idea. It also has a dark gothic Victorian feel to it which is lovely, the problem is the story is crap, its completely stupid and makes no sense and even thou...( read more)gh its a fantasy comic book adaptation, certain things are soooo ludicris its just laughable, a massive submarine able to cruise down the canals in Venice, and fitting under those tiny arch bridges lol and I mean massive submarine.

    "Prepare for the Extraordinary"

In an alternate Victorian Age world, a group of famous contemporary fantasy, SF and adventure characters team up on a secret mission.

    REVIEW

It begins with a rather im...( read more)pressive list of literary characters played by a formidable cast of up-and-coming actors and one very established favorite, Sean Connery. An impressive cast gathered for what could have been a stronger film. The story, fictional heroes and villains teamed together to battle an enemy of mother England, has great potential. And therein lies the problem with the film, it is great potential wasted as too many under established professionals attempt to step outside their comfort zones.

Thirty minutes into the film you've been introduced to all the characters and a complicated story of intrigue is about to develop. Unfortunately this is where things get drawn out, cheesy and just plain forgettable. By the end it's a cliché action-adventure with a creative group that ends up trying too hard. For instance, the special effects team goes over-the-top in creating a comparable foe for Hyde ruining the impressive work done up to then. By concentrating more on story, the filmmaker and his team could have had more pride in creative characters without the crutch of special effects.

As I write this I still have twinge of interest in the literary characters brought to life for me once again. If a sequel were proposed they would need to go back to the drawing board rather than trying to improve upon what's been started.

Is it great? No. Is it fun. Yes. I've never read the graphic novel and I probably never will. Suck on that fanboys

The British government engage the services of a group of adventurers each with their own special powers to foil a plot to cause a world war. Yet another effects laden blockbuster based on a graphic novel, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a little different because of its ...( read more)roots in classic literature. Each character is based on those featured in the works of Jules Verne, Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde and the like and does so with varying success. Connery's Alan Quartermain is a fun cross between Henry Jones Junior and Senior, Townsend's Dorian Gray is dashingly amoral and Captain Nemo is reinvented as a martial artist in command of some spectacularly designed art deco retro technology. Mr Hyde however is some kind of shaved prosthetic gorilla with a personality disorder, the lady vampire's relevance is tenuous and turning Tom Sawyer into a secret agent seemingly for the sole purpose of making the hero an American just daft. But some of the effects are very well done, the action is breathless and it doesn't take itself too seriously, making it a decent popcorn fueled firework display of the cinematic fire and forget kind.
