Alex Reid, Craig Conway, Leslie Simpson

In a remote mountain range, six girlfriends meet for their yearly adventure, a caving trip into the arteries of the earth. The group makes their way through the remote cave system, enjoying the hazard...( read more  read more... )ous but beautiful surroundings. Then, deep inside the cave, disaster strikes when their route back to the surface is blocked by a rock fall. When they learn that Juno, always pushing herself that little bit further, has brought them to an unexplored cave, and that no one is coming to rescue them, the group starts to splinter. Left with no other option, they push on through the cave, praying for another exit. The women battle through this harsh underground world, pitting their strength and determination against each new challenge. Unbeknownst to them, there is something else lurking under the earth, a race of monstrous creatures hidden from the light, evolved to live perfectly in the dark. As the friends realize they have become prey, they are forced to unleash their most primal instincts to face the creatures. As old wounds break open and loyalties disintegrate, the women realize the horrible truth-they have most to fear from one another.

"I'm an English teacher, not fucking Tomb Raider."

I was told that this was the best horror film in years, led to believe it was an absolutely terrifying, nightmare inducing masterpiece. So you can imagine how interested I was in seeing it, but, when i finally did, I was beyo...( read more)nd disappointed. I've watched it a few times now just to make sure my opinion is concrete.

It did have some good points, the lighting is definately the film's most effective element in creating tension, along with the tight claustrophobic cave atmosphere (I hate that *shudders*), mainly at the start. Admittedly, I did enjoy the beginning, it still had the feeling of the unknown at this point, and seemed to have the potential to be frightening.

But, when we then find out that the terrifying creatures are actually Gollum's pals getting together for a 'let's find the ring' reunion, it seems to lose that potential, the few pop out scares can't save it. The acting felt pretty average and i found it a little strange that 6 screaming chicks on the verge of hysteria, turn into John Rambo 2 minutes later. What annoyed me most of all was...when you figure out the bloody things are attracted to sound with their acute hearing and all, how about shutting the hell up! ...so you don't get munched!

The Descent is purely terrifying. It will provide you with an experience that relates entirely to those of the characters on screen. Each one is trapped, isolated and alone. In that theatre, you will understand the fear of having no escape. The film, like it's big brother 'Dog So...( read more)ldiers', takes British horror to it's deserved glory. Unlike such films as 'Creep', which was a complete mess, The Descent is a chilling experience that places believable characters into a situation that is strangely real, despite the obvious fiction. After a quarter of the film has passed, you pray for the characters escape as, in a way, you will also be saved from the mental onslaught that drives into your mind throughout. I didn't expect anything from this film before I walked into the theatre it, yet it is the greatest horror I have ever seen, and am likely to for a very long time.

Neil Marshall is fast becoming one of the best horror directors of resent years. This is a great film!

Six women become lost spelunking in a cave inhabited by vicious blind hunters. A unique setting for a horror film, and it's very exciting with fearsome lighting and editing once they finally get into the cave; but it's fronted by 30 minutes of backstory that never has any payoff...( read more), and there's barely a sniff of the cave monsters until the last half hour.

This is a horror film that's both scary in a serious way and fun in a cheesy way. Think Alien and Aliens in the same movie.

Having never seen The Descent before, I had been wanting to check it out after hearing so much positive feedback about it. I have to say that I wasn't disappointed. The movie was a very good modern day horror movie with all the right amounts of horror and suspense rolled in. I th...( read more)ink it was a good idea getting a fairly unknown cast of women (I had only seen two in other projects before) as you don't have a sense of what the fates of the characters will be. The ending was also a nice twist, as it was out of left field. Although, the American and UK versions are supposed to have different endings and this version had the UK one (the endings are the same, but the UK is extended).

If you are looking for a great horror movie full of thrills, suspense, action, and the makings of what a film of the genre should be, I highly recommend The Descent, as it had all of those things.

When I watched it. I thought this is how a horror movie should be!! Having an all female cast made this movie great!!
  • November 18, 2009
It wasn't the worst , but it sort've had the same problems as Doomsday. The Carpenter references are way to obvious. Its main flaw was in the dialogue and the fact that the girls turned into action stars out of no where. The effects and cinematography were really great looking, b...( read more)ut it didn't make up for the weak plot.

Exceptionally good modern horror film that is both gory AND genuinely suspenseful and scary. Neil Marshall is proving himself to be a pretty good director, and this is example B to back that up. The performances are pretty good, and bring some real feeling and emotion to the alre...( read more)ady tense atmosphere.

Claudia Puig, USA Today

For my money, [the] first 20 or so minutes are the best in the film. Once the real adventure gets underway in the cave, things get less interesting. full review
