Jenet & Caro are masters of cinema, this is a great follow up to their superb Delicatessen. A stunning film with some great characters and beautiful sets.

Twisted genius! Sorta' like Road Warrior meets Willy Wonka.

A mad genius is stealing the dreams of children in a fairy tale city; dim strongman Ron Perlman teams up with a streetwise urchin to get his kidnapped "little brother" back from the fiend. A triumph of the imagination: an amazingly detailed, weird, yet cohesive universe, with tw...( read more)o knockout scenes--the opening dream, and the "butterfly effect" sequence where a girl's depairing teardop turns into her unlikely salvation--that rival anything ever seen in visionary film.

City Of Lost Children is a hard film to review. I love directors like Del Toro, Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. These are filmmakers that try to push the levels of imagination that we expect from movies and trust me as a visual experience Jeunet makes something ...( read more)rather wonderful with City of Lost Children. Problems come up however when he has to deal with that pesky story and the actors. Everything is too complex and bizarre for its own good and while Ron Pearlman and the kid are good they don't drag you into the world it sets up. Its a film with a great vision that you can respect but its a very hard film to love and cherish like Pan's Labyrinth.

How can a film that looks this good can be so boring?

Beautiful, hilarious, and extremely twisted. One of the most creative films I've ever seen.

Here's a film which could only come from France. It's beautifully bizzare, witty, and quite dark at the same time.
  • October 18, 2009
Jeunet & Caro create an amazingly rich and beautiful alternate world, perfect for delving in to the fabric of humanity - or what makes us human, and what it is to be a child. The surreal design carries through to the music, and phenomenal performances by the entire cast. A trul...( read more)y unforgetable film, and one which demands multiple viewings. However, there are time when its weirdness can be quite overwhelming!

Did I just watch a Tim Burton movie? Wait no, it was in French!
This movie was interesting, scary, disgusting, exactly as nightmares should be. But it had its weak points as well. I found it difficult to hang on to the story.
The originality was there but it just couldn'...( read more)t convince me.

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Many people will probably not find themselves sympathetic to this movie's overachieving technological pretensions, while others will find it the best film in months or years. full review
