Bigger isn't always better, but for anyone who enjoyed Pitch Black, a nominal sequel like The Chronicles of Riddick should prove adequately entertaining. Writer-director David Twohy retu...( read more  read more... )rns with expansive sets, detailed costumes, an army of CGI effects artists, and the star he helped launch--Vin Diesel--bearing his franchise burden quite nicely as he reprises his title role. The Furian renegade Riddick has another bounty on his head, but when he escapes from his mercenary captors, he's plunged into an epic-scale war waged by the Necromongers. A fascist master race led by Lord Marshal (Colm Feore), they're determined to conquer all enemies in their quest for the Underverse, the appeal of which is largely unexplained (since Twohy is presumably reserving details for subsequent "chronicles"). With tissue-thin plotting, scant character development, and skimpy roles that waste the talents of Thandie Newton (as a Necromonger conspirator) and Judi Dench (as a wispy "Elemental" priestess), Twohy's back in the B-movie territory he started in (with The Arrival), brought to vivid life on a vast digital landscape with the conceptual allure of a lavish graphic novel. But does Riddick have leadership skills on his resumé? To get an answer to that question, sci-fi fans will welcome another sequel. --Jeff Shannon

Vin Diesel battles the evil Necromongers on planet Crematoria. That premise might have worked in a tongue-in-cheek Flash Gordon serial but here it's just sad and pathetic.

    This one isn't so good!
  • April 29, 2009
This is all over the place and not in an even remotely good way. It never seems to build up any momentum and seems to end because they ran out of film. The tip of the career iceberg for Diesel.

An explosive thrill-ride of unstoppable action entertainment. An utterly original and thrilling sequel taking the character to new teritory. A spectacular, adreniline-driven action-packed ride.

    "You keep what you kill..."

"Pitch Black" was an awesome movie that introduced us to one of the coolest "heroes" in the history of scifi. Vin Diesel's performance as Riddick is one of the most memorable characters of the genre.

I had very high hopes for this movie. David Twohy ...( read more)got a big budget which guaranteed us his vision as he would have wanted it to be seen. Everything looks very impressing and will surely satisfy every fan of Riddick.

Still, "The Chronicles of Riddick" has some faults. One is probably that the filmmakers have tried to do the "greatest scifi epic". They've reached for something way too big. A lot of mythology elements and things that are left unexplained are stuffed into the script. May seen a bit hard to get the hang of it if you're not at all familiar to Riddick's first adventure.

The majority of the audience was against this film and it failed at the boxoffice. I guess this film ain't for all. But if you're a vivid scifi fan as me, you'll probably love this movie.

Diesel does an excellent performance. Ok, I don't mind the hate mail or the deleting of my Flixster friendship. There's only one Riddick and that's Mr Diesel. He's got charisma, good screen presence and he's quite the ladies man. He surely has a sweet spot for his women.

"Its been a long time since I smelled beautiful"

There's been some talks of a third installment to the Riddick saga. In the web, you can find rumors about "Return to Furia". Nothing is confirmed yet, just rumors, but Diesel and Twohy would like to bring Riddick back to the screens. Perhaps the film would find a bigger audience if the filmmakers would go back to the "Pitch Black" way of making a Riddick movie. Who knows?

Still, the Riddick franchise is, for now, the best trilogy that wasn't made. I really hope that we would see Riddick once again on the big screen. It's been one hell of a ride everytime!

    - Tea, actually."

Probably would have liked it more, if I'd seen the first one.

It is always tricky when you change the genre of the sequal,it will either get the fans of the original angry at this change or they will forget this genre thing and enjoy watching the characters they loved in the original, suppossing the sequal was nicely done for sure. Here I g...( read more)ot mixed feelings at the first half hour I was furious that the movie maker changed the genre from Sci Fi Horror(like in the first two Alien films) into action similar to xXx but Sci Fi wise(If you considered xXx not a Sci Fi movie). As the movie progressed ,when I found the movie really worth my time, I forgot about the original, when of my favorites movies ever by the way, and started to enjoy. I donot know why this movie was a flop, maybe changing the genre thing, as it was a very good action SFX ride with Vin Diesel kicking the asses of different sorts of people. Some action scenes were very stunning and breathtaking, very evil villains that you hope you can kill them youself(a very cheesy quote I know but neccessary to get you in the mood to watch Sci Fi which is an enjoyable cheesy thing itself) and Thandie Newton is always a sweet thing to look at after all; really Sci Fi fans cannot ask for more.

"The very first time i heard about THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK is when i am just a college student in SLSU here in Lucban, Quezon. My friends almost hated me not hating Vin Diesel. That was 1996.

Knowing the fact that it is a very good movie, i found out that Vin Diesel is not just an ordinary man. He always face his own fear even the real life dangers."-Jane Bond 007

I'm not the biggest fan of Vin Diesel, but I have to say I was really impressed with Pitch Black. And I've got this movie waiting for me at home, so I'm hoping it will be just as good.

The only three reasons I didn't give this movie a full five stars was 1) The beginning was kind of 'fuzzy,' Twohy should have made everything as if this movie wasn't a sequel. 2) There should have been more character development, and a few characters had 'flat' personalities, and 3) There should have been more information of the Necromongers' beliefs.

Other than that this is an amazing movie!

Pitch Black was awsome, Riddick is just as good. I rekon that Vin Diesel is the absolute best ani-hero ever and his character Riddick, the Murdurer on the run, is one of my all time favorites.
