Roger is an aspiring songwriter who has emotionally shut down after his girlfriend's suicide. Despite his attraction, he is reluctant to start a new romance with his downstairs neighbor Mimi Marquez, an exotic dancer struggling with "baggage of her own." Roger's roommate Mark is a filmmaker trying to balance art and commerce. His girlfriend Maureen, a self-indulgent performance artist, recently left him for a lawyer named Joanne. Also part of this close-knit circle is Tom Collins, a professor of philosophy who, after being mugged, is rescued by his soul mate, a high-spirited street drummer, Angel Shunard. Benny, who alienated his friends after he married their landlord's daughter, has reneged on his promise to provide rent-free artist space to his bohemian friends. Once a close friend, he is now viewed as the enemy, threatening them with eviction.

although the music was pretty good and a few of the performances were solid, this film was an overall dissapointment. the plot was scattered and unclear and the story was told in fast forward. bravo for attempting to tackle tough subjects, but contraversy doesnt automatically m...( read more)ake a good film.

A few years ago I stumbled upon some Rent songs. I listened to them for a while, they were really good but later they were forgotten for some reason. Then I got the opportunity to see this movie and everything fell into place. I cried my eyes out, fell in love and here we are....( read more) Just living like there's no day but today.

David Edelstein, Slate

It's real -- and, on screen, it's really cringe-worthy. Not quite Phantom of the Opera cringe-worthy, but not as much fun to blow raspberries at, either. full review

December 6, 2005
Nick Schager, Lessons of Darkness

Constantly dragged down into mediocrity by Chris Columbus' dreary, rhythm-challenged direction. full review

November 23, 2005
Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

Most of the musical numbers aren't stylized (a natty tango number is an exception) but based in a Hollywood-gritty reality that at times feels silly. full review

November 23, 2005
Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail

The music and direction feel generic but the cast deserves credit for squeezing every possible drop of emotion out of the material. full review

November 23, 2005
Kyle Smith, New York Post

Rent showcases the hipster trend of getting nostalgic about grime and crime: it's slumtimental. full review

November 23, 2005
A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Chris Columbus's film affirms that Rent belongs in the pantheon of immortal musicals celebrating the self-dramatizing and resilient spirit of youth.

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Those who haven't seen Rent on the stage will sense they're missing something, and they are. full review

Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

Whatever qualities powered Rent to its numerous theater awards and long run onstage are missing from this charmless floperetta. full review

Ahhh! RENT is one of the best broadway plays out there and, of course, i prefered the stage version but Jonathan Larson was amazing and Columbus tried his best to pull this movie off and I think it came out pretty decietly. Besides...Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs, and Adam Pascal are AWESOME! Viva la vie boheme!

Worst Movie/play ever! The majority of the play and film were stolen (or "borrowed") from other works, the writing, music and acting or dreadful. As a gay man I completely and utterly hate this film and the ONLY reason it got so popular is because a bunch of gays think its cool and edgy and wouldn't know good theater or film if it bit them on the ass...If you think Phantom of the Opera or Cats (anything by Webber for that matter) is good or legitimate theater then you've just proven my point. Just because it has gay themes doesn't make it good. The writer couldn't even be original, when you have to steal character names, plots, themes, development, you're not a good writer, you're not edgy or smart, you're lazy and your work will suck, which it does! If you can sit through this piece of crap without getting pissed or laughing your ass of you really have no brain.
