I?m not a big film of rain, man!

I loved this movie, and I'm not a Tom Cruise fan at all. Such a sweet story!

Raymond: Of course I don't have my underwear. I'm definitely not wearing my underwear.
Charlie: I gave you a fresh pair of mine to wear. Where are they?
Raymond: They're in the pocket of my jacket. Here.
Charlie: I don't want them back.
Raymond: These are not boxer shorts. Mi...( read more)ne are boxer shorts. These are Hanes 32.
    Charlie: Underwear is underwear, Ray.
Raymond: My boxer shorts have my name and it says Raymond.
Charlie: All right, when we pass the store, we'll pick you up a pair of boxer shorts.
Raymond: I get my boxer shorts at K-Mart in Cincinnati.
Charlie: We're not going back to Cincinnati, Ray, so don't even start with that.

Its a road trip/buddy movie that features long lost brothers traveling together for sketchy reasons. That's simply put, but this film works due to its lead performances and Barry Levinson's direction, especially for the way the film doesn't feel like we have to like it just because its about a handicapped person.

Tom Cruise stars as asshole, fast talking, car salesman Charlie Babbitt. This is a cold, unhappy man, with his own business that he keeps afloat barely by using his yuppie skills on the phone. On the way to Palm Springs with his girlfriend Susanna, played by Valeria Golino, Charlie receives a call that his father has died. There's gonna be a delay in the fun weekend.

Upon arriving back home for the funeral, Charlie reveals that he hasn't spoken to his father for twenty years, after they had a falling out. Upon having the will read to him, Charlie learns that someone else receives the family fortune. With a little more work, Charlie learns that the money is going to an older brother he didn't even knew he had.

This brother is Raymond, played by Dustin Hoffman, who is a high function autistic savant. Charlie soon decides that he will take his brother out of the institution he has been living in, in an effort to claim half the inheritance for himself. What follows is a cross country journey (since Raymond wont fly) that leads to the toleration and eventual growth of love that Charlie will develop for Raymond.

Charlie: What you have to understand is, four days ago he was only my brother in name. And this morning we had pancakes.

I can't say I like Cruise's character (although he grew on me as the film went on), but I did like the performance. its a very "Tom Cruise" performance, but it works well here. Hoffman is just wonderful and I once again try to stress that its not just a "here's an actor playing a mentally challenged person," I generally liked everything about how Hoffman approached playing this character and how the story treats him.

As a whole, the movie follows a formula of sorts, but it does it very well. I enjoyed how everything played out and how Cruise's character develops. Raymond does too, but in much subtler ways. Levinson also makes sure to deliver a well made feature in terms of its technical aspects. The shots of the two traveling together in the convertible are good looking and a number of long takes, usually involving Raymond reacting to something add as well. The score by Hans Zimmer definitely grew on me as the film went on.

    A very good film overall.

Dr. Bruner: Raymond, wouldn't you feel more relaxed in your favorite K-Mart clothes?
    Charlie: Tell him, Ray.
    Raymond: K-Mart sucks.
    Dr. Bruner: Oh, I see.

Dustin Hoffman is always turning in amazing performances. Once again, he kicks ass in this film and makes you believe without hesitation that he has autism. How fucking hard would that be? Man!

But the performances aren't the only strong point of this film. I really enjoyed ...( read more)Levinson's direction and camera techniques he used. The movie was nicely shot and didn't fuck around with its cinematography. Pretty baller.

Oh, and Tom Cruise's Russian girlfriend was fuggin HOT...a rarity for 80's movies.

One of my old favourites, the best part Dustin Holfman has ever played. It gave an insight to the world into Autism.

An undisputed classic with an incredible award-winning performance from Dustin Hoffman, this is another of my favourite movies. Delving into the little-addressed issue of autism and Asperger's syndrome, Hoffman shines and is absolutely astonishing as Raymond Babbitt. There's not ...( read more)a lot I can say about this movie, it's utterly wonderful.

Rain Man is so fascinating because it refuses to supply those questions with sentimental but unrealistic answers. full review

(1988 Director: Barry Levinson) Dustin Hoffman...what talent!!! Yes, he outshined even Tom Cruise. Stealing the stage is a feat oft pulled off by Dustin (Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Doubtfire) A plus for understanding the disabled. A role Hoffman was made for. Cruise plays an initially unconcerned brother, spoiled rich kid feels he has lost his inheritance and displays amazing superficiality by seeking out the undisclosed "someone" to whom his father has left a $3 million trust. Dustin acts the role of an adult autistic character with true sensitivity. Cruise develops genuine concern for his older "lost" brother who was institutionalized due to the possible harm Hoffman (who has autims) posed to Cruise at home! All this occurs as Cruise's character is all but disinherited except for his wealthy father's prized 1949 Buick Roadmaster.

Contrary to one of the themes of this movie, K-Mart does NOT suck. I buy all of my three striped gym socks from this fine department store franchise.
Not to mention my tighty whiteys, epson salts, Musilex & 'Tussin cure-alls.

You do understand that Dustin Hoffman's character is an autistic savant, right? So his attitudes in the movie are justified because, guess what? THAT'S HOW SOME AUTISTIC PEOPLE ACT!

But I do see what you mean about the ending. The ending was definitely one of the best parts of the movie because it was realistic.

This is a character driven story which as far as movies are concerned is my first love, but this movie left me irritated!

Perhaps I am do not have the patience, nor the political correctness of someone who enjoyed or who would enjoy this film!? When I went to see it in the theater I fell asleep! It literally bored me into unconsciousness! When I finally saw the movie, for the first time, on dvd, I told my friends who I watched the movie with,...

"I wanna hit him! Can I hit'em? Please!!? Please,.. not to hurt him, just to make him shut the fuck up!"

...in an effort to display my frustration for Dustin Hoffmans character, ya know the retard with the 83 IQ...

The ending, the way that it ended, took some criticism and I actually enjoyed the ending and it was the best part of the movie. And no, not just for the cynical "Thank God!!! It's finally over!!!", but I understood the significance of the ending, it was poignant and it made sense.

The story was good, but the script was awful! The acting was good, but the moments of stupidity, in particularly for Hoffmans character, were excrutiating!!! A star and a half is all this movie is worth!

Terribly annoying... is an understatement, in an effort to describe this movie!
