Eddie Murphy is back in the world of comedy in top form with a movie that's both funny and warm-hearted.
  • November 13, 2009
The painful thing about this isn't the collage of retarded moments out of a moronic, 10 year-old written screenplay: it's how little it tries to actually be something. There's nothing new, nothing original, nothing smart, it's just a clip show of old comedy routines filled...( read more) with fat joke after fat joke.

The worst part? I sat through the whole thing and I smiled. Twice. But mostly at how weird/funny/cute it was to see Thandie Newton believing she was in some sort of intelligent british comedy instead of an Eddie Murphy fat suit movie.

I have a question: are black audiences really that stupid and easy to please? Don't get me wrong, I live south of the border, where we have our own issues with stupid audiences laughing at shit like this but it looks like something cultural or idiosyncratic: Tyler Perry, ghetto jive and fat suits. Seriously? That's what it takes to make a "proud" race laugh?

A friend said: "I love how shiny everything looks." and he's right. It's weird how technically competent this movie is: good cinematography (specially at the beginning, with all the flashbacks shot in sunny, warm atmospheres) and probably the best make-up in a fat suit movie yet. But, is that truly a compliment?
  • July 18, 2009
Murphy in more fat suits, what is it with these fat suits?? this is terrible, unfunny and kinda cruel to overweight people haha its also just an extension to his 'Nutty Proff' flicks but nowhere near as good, just a cash in.
  • August 18, 2008
''Remember, black people run very fast. But problem run faster.''

    ''That's kinda racist.''

''Yes, Wong very racist. Don't like black. Don't like Jew either. But black and Jew love Chinese food. Go figure.''

Eddie Murphy: Norbit / Rasputia / Mr. Wong

Eddie Murphy thinks he's clever. Eddie Murphy believes he can keep regurgitating his multiple roles in Nutty Professor proportions. Norbit shows us it's getting past the point of being not funny, old hat and completely irritating. Long gone are the days of Beverley Hills Cop and Golden Child or even Coming to America. But why Mr Murphy can pick an amazing film like Dreamgirls, then have the cheek to be in rubbish like this is beyond me.

So Eddie Murphy as Norbit, he plays a loser in this first so called main role. He's an Orphan who ends up being raised by Mr Wong, a Chinese Restaurant owner, who's about the funniest character in Norbit.
Mr Wong surprise surprise is played by Eddie Murphy too. Ends up being a smart cracking, one liner ridden, crease of laughs with his racist disposition.
God knows what possessed Thandie Newton & Cuba Gooding Jr to take part in the Norbit atrocities is beyond me.

Brian Robbins, a TV producer in real life, is maligned here as the director, Jay Scherick and David Ronn (co-writers of the Martin Lawrence-botched National Security) came up with a story of gore, body-function accidents, relentless pummeling of men, women and children of all races, although with more venom and contempt for blacks and Asians than the few token whites suffer.

The movie was offensive on so many levels. The racial humor wasn't funny. There are some lines with attempts at humour that really go too far(My chosen one is a fine example). Many of you who have seen it will understand what I mean. And those who haven't, I hope you don't support this film out of a curiosity, that indeed will kill the cat. Please, wait for Sky or Freeview for this.

I heard that it was Eddie Murphy's brother who came up with this idea. If EM did this as a favor to his brother, he could have done his brother, and himself a bigger favor by bringing Charlie in on a better project and tossing this script.

Eddie Murphy does put effort into his characters as always, but it's wasted energy. His job as Norbit gets lost in the low class, low level so-called comedy. Even though I just saw the film, I had to really remember that his performance as Norbit was decent. All I can think about is how offended I was by Norbit. Eddie Murphy even has the bold audacity to put in a talking dog, that rips off Men In Black and shows Norbit for the unoriginal crass fertilizer that it is.

Let's get real: This is the movie that cost Murphy an Oscar. Had the ads for this film not been lining billboards and subway stations exactly when the Academy Award ballots were being mailed to voters, there's a good chance Murphy would've walked away with the prize instead of Al...( read more)an Arkin. Another multiple character outing, this is a disturbing experience. It's so painfully bad but so inherently watchable that you actually hate yourself for enjoying it. It's a testament to Murphy's talent that anyone made it through the thing with brain intact. The comedian was criticized for exploiting racial stereotypes in the movie, but the film isn't just offensive to black or Asian Americans. It's offensive to anyone using their time or spending their money to sit through it

In my opinion it was Eddie's best movie ever(I know some of yall might go wit the Beverly hHills Cop series). The characters were off the wall and Mr. Murphy made Mr. Wong seem so real!!! Norbit is pretty much a bad-taste sinkhole, with Murphy competing against himself to see which of his three characters he can make more grating. full review

Too many of the gags in the sloppy comedy Norbit are lumbering and graceless, more fun to anticipate than to witness.

Norbit demonstrates that even when working with low-grade material, Murphy can be a superb actor. full review

Ok, when I first saw the previews for this movie, I thought that it was truly going to be dim-witted and mildly offensive, but to my surprise it was a really good movie. Why did I doubt Eddie Murphy? I just don’t know. Of course it had a few questionable moments, but what American movie on the planet doesn’t. The overall plot was nice and genuinely funny and it actually went somewhere. I still can’t believe that Chinese man was Eddie. He brought that character to life. This is a pretty good movie for a good laugh! You will love to hate Rasputia, and sympathize and cheer on Norbit.
