I am flipping through the movie channels, and I come across Mermaids. Even though I have seen this movie about a thousand and three time, and I own the DVD, what do I do, I sit and watch it.
I can't help it, I am weak. Mermaids is a stupendous film. It is a film that can be appr...( read more)eciated by all and should be embraced.
What is not to love about this film? There is a noteworthy cast, giving memorable and fun performances. Who does love Cher, Winona Ryder, and a young and oh so adorable Christina Ricci? Bob Hoskins also gives a great soul to Lou and it has Jake flipping Ryan ( Michael Schoeffling ) in it!
The story is a pleasant one. Coming of age, the loss of innocence, wanting something so bad you can taste it, afraid of loving too much and getting hurt, and the relationship between a mother and her daughters.
This film also has a prodigious soundtrack. Peggy Lee, Jackie Wilson, Shelley Fabares, Betty Everrett, The Four Seasons, Doris Troy, Smokey Robinson, Leslie Gore, Santo & Johnny... I am beginning to sound like one of those Time Life CD collection advertisements, solid sounds of the 60s Groovy Baby. I am a sucker for the oldies.
If you haven't seen Mermaids, watch it. You will laugh, you will cry and you just may fall in love.

" Oh I am going to hell for sure. Here he is talking his poor dead mother, and I can't help wishing his hands were unbuttoning my dress."

A very entertaining comedy drama as a family move town.

Charlotte wants to be everything her mother isn't - pious, proper, humble, and pure. Her good intentions, however, are constantly in conflict with her basic nature, which is more like her mothers. Charlotte develops a fierce crush on Joe, the caretaker at a nearby convent. When M...( read more)rs. Flax's potentially serious relationship with the endearing Lou, played by Bob Hoskins, hits a rough patch, she too finds herself attracted to Joe. With competition for his affection to add fuel to the fire between Mrs. Flax and Charlotte, the only thing they can seem to agree on is caring for Katie, Charlotte's little sister, charmingly played by a young Christina Ricci. As things come to a head in the small town where the Flaxes are living, Katie's well-being hangs in the balance while both her mom and older sister try to work through their impulses. "Mermaids" is a sensational and very funny comedy, with an intelligent script, doing jokes on a moralist girl who has a totally different mother, really is the best film of the director Richard Benjamin. Further more it has Cher, in one of their best performances of all your career, she manages to give an incredible her veracity character, which becomes one of the most striking than Cher already did; Winona Ryder also is excellent, just stayed perfect as the daughter of Cher, and Christina Ricci, who since of small already showed that I had certain talent. "Mermaids" it is a great comedy, a film that owns an intelligent humor, without appealing to peeped without thanks, besides being a criticism to the moralism of some people of the society, in fact is a work that deserves to be seen, because it is guaranteed fun.

Not bad - Bob Hoskins is superb. Who would have thought that Christine Ricci would be such a heralded actress?

A solid film that is part comedy and part drama. Stars Cher, Bob Hoskins and Winona Ryder. About a family that moves into a new home. And the mother and oldest daughter both find love. Sort of a coming of age story. The story is solid and has a great cast. The movie though is mor...( read more)e geared for a female audience. But still a good film to watch for all.
