Without a doubt, the best gangster film ever made!

A True crime classic. A masterpiece. Loads of great vintage style. It's wildly funny and terifying at other times. An incrediable movie. Director, Martian Scorsese's best work yet. Ray Liotta is elecfrifying, he gives a performance thats stands with movie legends and one of the b...( read more)est performances of the 90's decade. Joe Peci is a unforgettable knockout, he gives humor and intensity to his hard edged role. Robert De Niro is teriffic. Lorraine Bracco is fantastic. One of the best gangster films ever made. Stylish, powerful and explosive.

THE best gangster film of all time. This film is absolutely flaw-free, everything is done down to absolute perfection. Scorsese's fast, violent, stylish mobster movie is a return to form, De Niro, and the Italian-American underworld. But in following, from '55 to the late '70s, t...( read more)he true-life descent into big-time crime of Henry Hill (Liotta), he and co-writer Nick Pileggi seem less concerned with telling a lucid, linear story than with providing sociological evidence of an ethically (ethnically?) marginalised society united by the desire to make a fast buck. Because Hill and the older 'good fellas' he first falls in with as an awestruck kid - De Niro, Pesci, Sorvino - exist almost totally on the surface, we watch shocked and beguiled but never come to care. The camera and cutting style is as forcefully persuasive as a gun in the gut, so that we are not enlightened but excited by the cocky camaraderie, bloody murder, and expansive sense of 'family' on view. Still, the movie excites the senses in a way few film-makers even dream of, and its epic sweep and brilliantly energetic film language rest on a cluster of effortlessly expert performances.

In my previous reviews of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull I mentioned that Martin Scorsese was screwed by the Academy in not receiving and Oscar for either of those films. Goodfellas is the third one he got screwed on. It's the story of a Brooklyn youth who slowly becomes indoctrined...( read more) into the Mafia and how the world of gangsters in New York City worked in the '50's, '60's, and '70's. It sounds like a simple story, but it isn't. There's a ton of threads rolling around in Goodfellas, but Scorsese is able to present them in a way that keeps the viewer entranced with what's going on before them.

The core Goodfellas are Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci with Liotta playing the lead role of Henry Hill. These three work together so well that they become their characters and you feel like they've known each other for the three decades that this film follows. De Niro plays the sort of patriarch gangster Jimmy Conway, who isn't quite the boss (who is played masterfully by Paul Sorvino) but has a lot of pull and is feared in the underworld. Joe Pesci won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role as Tommy DeVito, a psychotic hitman who is still pretty damn likable throughout the film.

Goodfellas is based on the book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi who co-wrote the screenplay with Scorsese. There is no specially written soundtrack to this film as the director has opted to go with music from each era that's represented, which helps with the effect. The films pace is breathtaking as we go from one event to another. A lot of time and information is covered, yet you don't feel bombarded nor do you feel like something's left out. It's perfect.

Goodfellas is probably the best gangster movie ever made. When compared to the Godfather this is a grittier film that feels more true to life than Coppola's epic. What's really funny about Goodfellas is that it's really a film about a fall from grace, but not like the way it's typically portrayed. It's a classic.

"As far back as I can remember, I've always wanted to be a gangster."

Henry Hill and his friends work their way up through the mob hierarchy.

Another Scorsese scorcher like Casino, the narration is top notch as we see Henry Hill grow up and life as a mobster/gangster.

Violent, graphic and detailed. It's one of the best Gangster films out there which is apparent as soon as it begins and were treated to a perfect blood soaked car boot scene.

Ray Liotta as Henry Hill is a cool character as we see him evolve in a web of friends in the mob. His narration is pretty damn compelling to listen too as the story progresses.
Rober De Niro is a great supporting lead role and naturally plays amob affiliated chracter, in this case Jimmy.
Joe Pesci as usual is the tough, no nonsense guy who provides the comic relief as well as having a mean streak. He's a nut, i love it!

Martin Scorsese's style shines through, good close ups and zooming and panning shots.

Music suitable for the era. the end of the 80s bordering on the 90s.

Goodfellas explores Mobster life over 25 years accurately, an undisputed masterpiece.

One of the best of its genre. I thought half way through I had watched it at the wrong time after seeing the Sopranos series as well as other Mafia movies, but this is in a league of its own. De Niro, Pesci and especially Liotta are on fire in this and I don't think Pesci or Liot...( read more)ta ever had better roles. Also like the little cameo from Samuel L and pretty much everyone from Sopranos. The ending is what made it excellent for me.

Definitely one of Scorsese's best and a true masterpiece. It is an amazing story with a great variety of characters.
