As much as I like this film I still can't shake the nagging suspicion that someone else could have brought a little more depth to the part of Colonel Robert Shaw. Broderick does a good job but his portrayal doesn't entirely ring true. It's as though his 20th century sensibiliti...( read more)

Quite possibly the only time you'll hear Matthew Broderick and serious film uttered in the same sentence. A tour de force for Black Hollywood though.

I have seen this multiple times. I seriously don't think there is a single thing wrong with this movie. I understand that it may not be 100% accurate with every historical detail (though the filmmakers sure seem to come close). I'm all for making people aware of inaccuracies i...( read more)

Glory is the story of a white liberal Bostonian Colonel who headed the first black regiment in the Union army. Like most of this kind of worthy and well meaning historical dramas, Glory is a little patronizing and guilty of emotional manipulation, sometimes descending into schmal...( read more)

The second watch was probably even better. One of the best historical films of all time, an epic movie about the the Civil War. The superb performances of Mathew Broderick, Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman make this movie an amazing film.

Good movie with a great cast. This movie is very inspirational and dramatic. A look into the northern army of the civil war, Matthew Broderick commands an all black battalion. Disobeying orders and paving the way for anti-racism broderick accompanied by Cary Elwes lead Morgan Fre...( read more)

if you put Denzel and Morgan Free man in one film... it will be good.. although Matthew Broderick should have done better... but his lack of acting was overshadowed by both Denzel and Morgan...

Civil War films do not get any better than this. It is dramatic at every point, and flawless in it's story-telling. A must see.

June 17, 2008I think this movie is probably the best war movie I have ever seen.
It was perfect. It showed signs of slavery, while attaining a war ground to it. -
June 14, 2008During the attack seen in this movie, Fort Wagner, sadly, was not taken by the Union. Some say it was, but the regiments that came in from behind, while Colonel Shaw and the 54th was doing their thing(dying), failed...
(After that night, the Union kept a long seige on the Fort. A long time after that, the Confederates snuck out and retreated towards Charleston. So, the Fort was actually taken, but not by force.)
"But what makes him [Colonel Robert Shaw] an extraordinary individual lies beyond this noble deed [the battle at Fort Wagner]. In what would be a only a few months with the regiment, Shaw's remarkable personal growth found him transformed from "an ordinary mortal" to a compassionate and selfless leader who laid down his life for his men and for a race. This is what makes him a true hero." -
May 5, 2007You should see it.My History teacher said it was based off of the letters Colonel Robert Gould Shaw sent home during his time in the Union Army.It was the most hisorically factual movie ever made!

SEE IT! -
October 22, 2006I believe that this is one of the greatest war movies ever. Check the history books, because almost everything in this movie, contrary to most other war movies, is true. Everyone should see this.

September 28, 2006It is hard to believe that the same person who played baby-faced Ferris Bueller in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and in a number of teen movies, would play Colonel Robert Gould Shaw in "Glory"-Matthew Broderick!
A shame he wasn't nominated for an Oscar, but no biggie. Mr. Broderick turned in a masterpiece of a great acting performance as the doomed colonel, reminding us that he can take any role-comedic or dramatic, and can turn the role into gold!
