Original and compelling, a real treat to watch even if it does feel like a long music video in places. Brilliant! Great soundtrack too!

"I already forget how I used to feel about you."

A couple undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories when their relationship turns sour, but it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.

Simply amazing film has two eccentrics (Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet) falling head-over-heels in love after a chance meeting on a subway and spending the day together. But after a rough breakup the two decide they want each other 'erased' from their memories. The film follows Joel (Carrey) as he undergoes the process; entering the mind of him as his memories are being erased. This is perfect film-making at work. Charlie Kaufman's screenplays are always brain-teasers/puzzlers and this one is no exception. Right when you think you get it, you figure out you don't and you keep trying to pick it apart. That's only half the fun. Michel Gondry does a fantastic directing job as we pass through Carrey's crumbling mind; he combines eeriness, surrealism, absurdity and makes it all come alive. As for the cast; Carrey and Winslet have never been better. Mark Ruffalo is a standout in support as the man erasing his memory. This one will stick with you for quite some time. Highly recommended.

The power of memories as part of our feelings are the main theme of this thoughtful, weird and very interesting movie. Its unique imagery is outstanding and the storytelling of the script makes for a very diverting film that yet requires the audience's attention and concentration...( read more). Despite of the fantastic main idea, it is realistic, sweet, funny, sad and true.
It's nothing new that Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are great actors and do a tremendous job here once again, together with great people like Elijah Wood as whiny loser, Tom Wilkinson and Mark Ruffalo. The surprise is Kirsten Dunst with a very natural and excellent performance, probably the best of her career. Brilliant stuff, and an unforgettable movie.

Read Adaptation for my history with Kaufman. I loved ESotSM because of the originality, mixing genres, and especially the acting. Jim Carrey is comedy gold, but as Truman and this have shown us, he is best at dramedy. Kate Winslet is awesome at her wonderful performance of Clemen...( read more)tine. Wood, Ruffalo, Dunst and Wilkinson are also great.

excellent writing, unconventional directing, shifting points of perspective towards a hallucinatory feel, herky jerky camera work and a first rate cast combine for an honest depiction of both the fragility of our tenderest heart connections and the brutal savagery of our emotionally charged breakups. carrey, for once, is either directorially restrained or shows self-restraint to deliver the jimmy stewart in this that he always wanted to be...and, he's right, he's really brilliant at it. and kate winslet amply proves that helena bonham carter's not the only one who knows her way around emotionally damaged types. but all of these words are simply a flimsily constructed intellectual mask hiding my absolute love for this work, an intricate anti-valentine valentine for lovers. 5 stars.

I think this the most well written movie I've ever seen. I have never seen Jim Carrey performing like this. Kate Winslet was great too. One extra thing you have to spot in the movie is the music. The music was really great, Jon Brion did a great job.

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen, Jim Carrey's best work to date. I think some day this movie will be truely reconginzed for its brilliance and Jim Carrey will be recognized for his overlooked acting abilities.
