Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden

A classic Disney animated fairy tale meets with the modern, live-action romantic comedy in Walt Disney Pictures' ENCHANTED. Featuring an all-star cast, the film follows the beautiful princess Giselle ...( read more  read more... )(AMY ADAMS) as she is banished by an evil queen (SUSAN SARANDON) from her magical, musical animated land and finds herself in the gritty reality of the streets of modern-day Manhattan. Shocked by this strange new environment that doesn't operate on a "happily ever after" basis, Giselle is now adrift in a chaotic world badly in need of enchantment. But when Giselle begins to fall in love with a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer (PATRICK DEMPSEY) who has come to her aid -- even though she is already promised to a perfect fairy tale prince (JAMES MARSDEN) back home -- she has to wonder: can a storybook view of romance survive in the real world? ENCHANTED is directed by Kevin Lima ("Tarzan", "Eloise At Christmastime") from a screenplay written by Bill Kelly ("Blast From the Past") and will feature original songs from the reunited team of acclaimed composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz ("Pocahontas", "Hunchback of Notre Dame").

I see films for many reasons, the most obvious being to be entertained. Sometimes it's out of curiosity, sometimes for a learning experience. And then some films I see because I want them to challenge my views, maybe show me a different approach to how I see the world. Enchanted ...( read more)is one of those films.

The initial appeal of seeing it was that it would be a contrast of the "real world" vs "animated worlds" in terms of people and their ways of life. Little did I expect the romances of the characters to move me the way it did. The cynic in me died a little and that is no mean feat.

Really, what can be said about Amy Adams that hasn't been said already? It's as if she was born all those years ago just to play this part, like the powers that be chose the 20th of August, 1974 as part of some Palpatine-esque gambit to get her in this movie (I believe the same thing about Robert Downey, Jr in Iron Man). That's how wonderful she is in this film.
And her singing, it's just too divine for any mere mortal. It is one of the most sincere portrayals I've ever seen. And the writing for her character is solid too. Like the rest of the film, it chooses not to mock one side or the other over the debate of "love at first sight vs a long-lasting relationship" but gives the idea that it is possible to have both. As Giselle goes through the movie, she learns so much about her new world but her core character aspects of optimism and selflessness remain intact. If this were a lesser film, these aspects would either be completely eroded and she would become like everyone else or she would be the same but every single person around her would start thinking like her with even the slightest provocation. The fact that it can maintain a sense of balance throughout is the second strength of this film.

The decision to animate Giselle's world in traditional 2D cel animation is a refreshing touch and the results are marvelous and manages to pay homage to some of Disney's well known films. I wish we could have seen more but that doesn't make the movie any worse for only 13 minutes of animation.

Despite being best known as Cyclops in the X-Men franchise, I believe that this is James Marsden's best effort to date. Here he can have fun and be utterly confident and bold and he does so with panache and his vocals are top notch.

If I do have one fault with this film, it's that I'm worried Timothy Spall will be typecast as an assistant to the villian in fantasy/musical films for years to come (go and watch the Red Dwarf episode "Back To Reality" after watching this or the Harry Potter films he's in and you'll be quite surprised by his role). Don't get me wrong, his character is a great one (and how he fits into the "real world" so quickly is staggering, it makes me believe he's been there before. Either that, or he's a quick study) but I'm sure Timothy could do well with a different role if given the chance. Hopefully, we'll see that different role pop up.

I came into this film expecting an amusing "fish out of water" tale with a difference. I did not expect a lavish musical with excellent performances and most of all, I did not expect my heart to melt a little. Thank you, Enchanted. Thank you for reminding me that positivity can be a good thing without being condesecending or utterly sugar coated.

I didn't think I would really like this film, but I actually loved it. Some parts were just hilarious and I thought it was adorable for the kids.

A great compilation of fairytale cliches. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and it's original take on some of the oldest stories.

Enchanted is worth seeing for Adams, and children will adore the slapstick performers, including a prominently featured CGI chipmunk. full review

A gently meta fairy tale that pokes fun at Disney's animated classics, just never too hard to hurt. full review

A heart-winning musical comedy that skips lightly and sprightly from the lily pads of hope to the manhole covers of actuality, if you see what I mean. I'm not sure I do. full review

What I liked here MOST was that it shows the princess can sometimes save the prince as well - she too can be the hero. They pay homage to all the old Disney movies too with little secret clues - some are obvious and some not so obvious but if you utilize the Blu-ray options they will actually pop-up on screen and show you - very very clever. So it's like a hidden game within the movie. A lot of fun.

I ended my review of this movie with possibly the weirdest metaphor I have ever used in my entire life. I just... I felt like I had to point that out to someone. It's truly, sincerely bizarre.
