Paul Bartel, Mary Woronov, Robert Beltran

You'd think a black comedy about murder, tackiness, and sexual perversion would quickly become dated, but Eating Raoul (1982) feels surprisingly fresh and delightful. When Mary Bland (Mary Wo...( read more  read more... )ronov) gets assaulted by one of the repulsive swingers from the neighboring apartment, her husband Paul (Paul Bartel) rescues her with a swift blow from a frying pan--only to discover a substantial wad of cash in the swinger's wallet. A lure-and-kill scheme follows, which nicely fills their nest egg until a slippery thief named Raoul (Robert Beltran of Star Trek: Voyager, making his film debut) stumbles onto the truth and insists on getting a share. When Raoul starts demanding a share of Mary as well, Paul has to take drastic steps. The key to Eating Raoul isn't the sensational content, but the blithe, matter-of-fact attitude Bartel and Woronov take to it; their sly underplaying makes the movie sparkle with wicked wit. --Bret Fetzer

I like Paul Bartel and Robert Beltran, but this movie was pretty silly - I could never get into the zaziness of it all. People keep saying how risque and funny it is, but it went over my head. Maybe I'll give it another viewing someday.

makes me hungry. Swing on this!

The ending of this film was not at all what I expected, which made it even more fun that it started out to be. Mary Woronov and Paul Bartel play a prim and proper couple whose lives get turned around by a visitor to their home.

Ever wonder what Robert Beltran was doing BEFORE Star Trek: Voyager? He was making wonderfully campy B-movies. This one is a hoot.

A really great black comedy in its own little world.

Don't get me wrong, Eating Raoul is an amusing movie. However, I had one major issue with it. Bartel made a film that's very offensive to fetishists. The movie ridicules such people in a very untactful way. Had it been handled in a different manner, it may have been acceptable.

One of the best black comedies ever. This was the first "black comedy" I ever saw, so I didn't realize they existed- before then, none of my friends thought I had a sense of humor! I just found out today that my favorite minor character (the sex shop owner) is Jambi the Genie fro...( read more)m Pee Wee's Playhouse.

Black comedy with some nice touches. Smarmy characters encounter Paul & Mary and soon stop being smarmy. A new way to gain financial independence is depicted.
