I can sum this one up in just two words: "Ass Worms"

A very stupid King adaptation but I quite liked it, in a guilty pleasure sort of way. Always keep the toilet seat down!!

As Stephen King fans should probably know, there are a lot of things in Stephen Kings books that make sense only where they are - that is, in Stephen King books. Translating them to film is usually a bad idea, as many filmmakers who had adapted King's books before probably figure...( read more)d out. But along comes Lawrence Kasdan, a talented and acclaimed veteran director, who, with the aid of a no less acclaimed screenwriter William Goldman, decides while writing a script for Dreamcathcer that it would be better to bring along all the trademark King's weird goings-on - and voila! We have a movie filled with telepathy, butt-ripping aliens, crazy military types keen on killing everyone, telephone-guns, indian symbols and even a lot of CGI thrown in for a good measure. Of course, it all fails - but oh how gloriously! I'll go as far as to state that Dreamcatcher is absolutely the best unintentional B-movie trashfest in years! It was totally amusing that such a bunch of undoubtedly talented people (Morgan Freeman, Tom Sizemore, Thomas Jane, besides aforementioned Kasdan & Goldman) were able to make this film without a single smirk - while the material is pure trash'n'cheese. That was the whole beauty of it, for me, at least - the level of money, work and talent that went into creating this film. I would like to personally thank all the people involved with Dreamcathcer - they made my year! Thank you, Lawrence Kasdan! Thank you, William Goldman! Thank you, Morgan Freeman - your eyebrows rocked! And most of all, thank you, Jason Lee - the bathroom scene involving Beaver and an alien worm under the toilet lid is pure classic!

An odd mishmash of kind of interesting as well as rather stupid elements.

Also, to quote Rober Ebert: "The movie [has] too many farts for a movie that keeps insisting, with mounting implausibility, that it is intended to be good."

Holy shit, what happened? I mean this movie is trying to be ten different things at once. With the talent attached, I just can't imagine anyone thinking this was a good idea.

Well? you cant judge a book by its cover... or by its trailor in this case. Strange from the git go, and not in a good way. Imo a suffers from a bad plot.
  • November 14, 2009
Hmm...like it only because its Stephen King's. The performances? Baaaaad.

David Edelstein, Slate

King is dreamily free-associating, which doesn't mean he's plumbing his unconscious in search of new nightmare archetypes; it means he's recycling bits of old horror and sci-fi flicks and even setups ... full review

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

A head-scratchingly silly B-movie, blending boyish sentiment and cheesy creature effects, that even Morgan Freeman can't save. full review

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

A likable disaster. full review

King deserves better. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Dreamcatcher begins as the intriguing story of friends who share a telepathic gift, and ends as a monster movie of stunning awfulness. full review

A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Everything here is so clumsily handled that the creepy sensation of dread that infuses the early moments is quickly washed away on a tide of space slime and wearying exposition. full review

Claudia Puig, USA Today

Though the tale, adapted from Stephen King's best-selling novel, starts out with an eerie sense of foreboding, Dreamcatcher fails to deliver thrills and chills. full review

Nick Schager, Slant Magazine

As in King's derivative novel, the story is overstuffed with too many unnecessary (if occasionally cool) elements. full review

The worse film I have seen by a mile.

the special feature in the dvd has steven king's private endorsement with his remarks upon it. the most attention-grappler would probably be the outter space creature sneaks out of man's butthole on the toilet which king actually takes pride in..king says that the most taboos of our own are mostly discovered inside the bathroom which is a part forbidden in the system of civilization..that sounds like something pseudo-intellectual...about my personal opinion, the restroom scene feels like some cheap b-grade oriental horror with a ridiculous whim. ABSOLUTELY CHEESY!!! actually lots of people in orient share an peculiar horror fancy that a hand reaches out from the toilet to tickle your butthole...now it appears even in steven king. besides jason lee is so quickly disposed in the flick..the alien possession narrative is just silly...what a mess.
