    "He was an honest man, and he didn't deserve any of what happened to him. "

    Wow. Simply put... Wow. The future of the sci-fi genre is saved and Neill Blomkamp is the reason why it all looks so hopeful. Blomkamp was projected to direct the 'Halo' movie, which is based on the succ...( read more)essful video game. Peter Jackson was the producer but things didn't go as planned. The project was cancelled (maybe later?) but Jackson saw something special in this young South African director, who had previously made short films, 'Alive in Joburg' for example (D9 is based on this short film) and visual effects to several TV shows. He gave him a budget of 30 million USD's and free rein to do what he wanted. The outcome? One of the best sci-fi films ever and 200 million USD's worldwide...

    In the beginning of the 80's, a huge alien craft landed over Johannesburg, South Africa. When the humans started to check out the ship, they found thousands of crab like creatures inside, fugitives of their own world. None of them were hostile, just in hunger. All of them were transferred to a district, especially build for them. 30 years later, Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is given the job to retransfer the aliens to a new district, in other words evict them, and at the same time gather all of their weapons and technology for the company, NMU (Multi-National United).

    Van De Merwe gets an alien infection during a search. All of a sudden he starts to feel ill and gets transported to NMU headquarters where things start to go really bad for him. It seems as he has gotten some alien DNA in his own and is now the key to solve the problem with alien weaponry...

    The story of 'District 9' is reinforced with current subjects, e.g weapon technology, and criticism against social things, mainly racial segregation aka apartheid, which was a big problem years ago in South Africa. But it's not all that serious though and never gets too preachy or anything... 'District 9' may go a bit campy at times with its humor and storytelling but the mockumentary style will surely make you want to know what will happen next.

    Weta Workshop, the company behind several award winning special effects (LOTR trilogy..) has given us very fotorealistic effects. The creatures, the end scene battle with alien tech guns etc. And think about the budget? What would Michael Bay do with, let's say 15 million, besides shooting Megan Fox in slow mo... The action looks just as good, at times even better?, than the effects in other effect driven films (Transformers 2, Terminator Salvation etc...). The editing by Julian Clarke and Trent Opaloch's cinematography boost up the outcome of the movie. And think that Blomkamp, Clarke and Opaloch are just in their early 30's! Can't wait to see what they'll bring us next.

    But he real star of the film is Sharlto Copley, I'm sure an unknown face to all of you. 'D9' is his first feature film and what a performance! Copley, a childhood friend of Blomkamp, gives us in overall a mindblowing performance. He shows us that he can do comedy as well as more serious drama. I really can't think of another performance that has amazed me as much as Copley's. His next feature is 'The A-Team' so I'll definitely check it out, just because of him.

    'District 9' is now, without any doubt, one of my all-time favourites in its own genre. This film is one of the most original films I've seen and will surely give the audience laughter, excitement without forgetting its serious subjects.

    For a debut feature, 'D9' is a really strong performance by Neill Blomkamp. There's already been some discussion of a prequel or a sequel, as the story is left a bit open. Hopefully I'll get to read some good news at some point... Highly recommended to all you buffs!

    A timeless classic.

    We're watching history in the making, like those people who saw those movies back in the day.

    I mean...really? I'm sorry, I don't get it why this movie has received so much appraisal and hype. I always do all that is in my power to avoid sci-fi movies, but since Peter Jackson is involved, I decided giving this particular one the benefit of doubt. And either I'm jus...( read more)t too yokel-like to get it, or this movie really is that overly over-rated.

    Is it supposed to teach us something about humanity? A terrifying vision of the future? A literal translation of South Africa's state today? A portrait of the world at large? Because the aliens seemed just as savage and brainless as the humans did. I keep hearing how unpretentious this movie, how original and different...well, different isn't always good. I absolutely hated it, and found it extremely repetitive and annoying. This movie just isn't for me, and I wish I could see what people see in it that's so great - because for me it was a crazy, indulgent, illiberal project with no linear storytelling and no purpose.

    This review is LIKELY to contain some or all of the following:

    - spoilers;

    - a couple of extremely racist remarks;

    - a recipe for a potentially kinky soy sauce;

    - two possibly prized lottery ticket numbers;

    - the exact location of Madeleine McCann.

    I don't understand the h...( read more)ype surrounding District 9. I truly don't. It seems like everybody is just so eager to appreciate original cinematic ideas nowadays that they clearly go out of their way to swear to you how brilliant and thought provoking such and such movies were, just because they debated something under a different light.
    Come on.

    Pertinent philosophical and sociological aspirations thrown together in an unusual concept do not make a good movie by themselves. District 9 has LOTS of flaws. Regardless of the - lame and unappealingly developed - Apartheid allegory intent, regardless of the moral and social dilemmas, regardless of the well accomplished CGI, regardless of the slightly interesting camera work. Of the top of my head, here are a few of the aforementioned flaws that made me want to turn Neill Blomkamp into a human pinata:

    - RIDICULOUS main plot. Better yet, no plot whatsoever. Sequence of events? Yeah, sure. Coherence? You wish;

    - what kind of pathetic, unplanned, unprepared, completely amateur military operations are those? So your main plan to evict and reallocate pissed off, primal instinct-driven and completely socially disrespectful alien prawns is to send a testosterone influenced squad led by an untrained Microsoft wanna be four-eye geek (our main character, by the way) whose main mission is to use a "Joseph Smith's Bible salesman" door-to-door approach, whilst trying to make them SIGN AN EVICTION NOTICE??? Sure. This has everything to work out as fine as a 30 Seconds to Mars release;

    - key to enter a supposedly highly secured and militarized building and steal one of their new, well protected toys: get a guy who's part human, part alien, part idiot, who can make use of handy technologically advanced weapons, mix him with a highly ethical prawn, who's a single parent and suffers from a Gandhi complex, and slice a couple of cherry tom... no, wait. That's pretty much it;

    - here's a humble tip. For the immense amount of insane, free and pointless action presented to us in the final act of the movie, a Charles Bronson type of character would probably contribute to a better outcome. Charles Bronson, in his current state, would probably contribute for a better outcome. It was like watching Bill Gates awkwardly copulating with Optimus Prime for a greater goal. Painful;

    - so you have all these alien folks packed up in this nice, cozy slum. A slum may not sound like much for the common ear. But that's alright. You see, that way aliens can live in peace among themselves, with no humans in sight to nag and annoy them. Unless, of course, you consider Nigerian black marketeers with a higher appeal towards witchcraft and cannibalism who sell cat food (no, there is no misspelling here. This is actually part of the plot. Apparently, alien prawns have a thing for cat food. That's actually interesting, because where I come from, such creatures have a different name. They're called cats) at exorbitantly high prices or who trade it for weapons that NO ONE can use, to be humans. I know I don't;

    - apparently, the humans named the aliens so they could better identify them. One of them was named Mr. Johnson. An alien. A prawn-like alien. Named Mr. Johnson. Enough said.

    Again, this was just of the top of my head.
    I could go on and on, if only the top of my head had a better storage capacity.

    Someone wrote on a review that "The key to enjoying DISTRICT 9 is to sit back, and not to nit-pick".
    I beg to differ.
    A movie that aims so high should definitely be the subject of a harsher sense of criticism.
    FAR from perfect.

    Apart from that, great movie!

    For those who read this review with a high sense of anticipation, my apologies.
    Truth is, I have no idea how to make a kinky soy sauce.

    Yet.

    To start of, I'm not a fan of science fiction. And although the reviews were good, I didn't expect anything of it.
    What I liked is that Peter Jackson used relatively unknown actors, and that the setting wasn't America, but Johannesburg, South Africa (obviously chosen because of ...( read more)it's history with apartheid).
    Overall the acting, the characters and the story didn't really leave an impression, but it was more the idea behind it that interests me.

    It portrays -the not so pretty- basic human behavior in relation to what's unknown or considered unsafe, and places it in an entirely different or even absurd context. The target-group in this movie are aliens, but it just as well could've been any other minority, and District 9 any other ghetto.
    And then there are of course the hidden agenda's, the weapons, the conflicting interests and how we will do anything to get what we want.

    I was curious at first, slowly getting annoyed... then angry.. and then sad! , but I liked it :)

    i'm pretty sure i;m not gonna like it!I'm over big loud alien movies,no matter how high budgeted they are.

    INSTANT CLASSIC!
    I've been waiting for something like this to be made for a very long time. You've got to applaude the approach to this film. It sets up like a documentary which helps keep it realistic and gets across the notion that this alien race of refugees have been stran...( read more)ded on earth for 20 years already and everybody's just gotta accept that.
    Firstly the look and feel to this film is amazing. The CGI creatures and the ship look awsome. The prawn's language sound great too. The weapons and gore is simply horrific which i love. It has a gritty style to alot of the action with documentary-like camera work which looks cool.
    The story starts off with the humans needing to relocate the alien race out of the city because the crime rate is too high and there's too much racial tension between the prawns and humans. The politics of the film are based on the apartheid in South-Africa which is clever i though. There's a great sense of urgency throughout the film and i though the main character was brilliant, the guy playing him did a great job. The action is just mind-blowing! literally! great fun to watch! The story does kind of tail off a little at the end and goes a bit hollywood but still this is a brilliant movie that will be talked about for years.
  • November 23, 2009
    The layers of meaning within this film is extraordinarily thick and it does not take a genius to figure out the nuances of inhumanity that the film sets out to portray.

To call this the best shrimp-from-outer-space South African apartheid allegory ever made does not begin to do it justice. But it's a start. full review

The movie falls into the same uneasy category as Eight Legged Freaks: too tongue-in-cheek to be thrilling, not funny enough to be a comedy. full review

Socked in with the whiplash action and over-the-top gore is a story that's shockingly funny, clever and emotionally resonant. District 9 is that rarest kind of film, magnificent trash. full review

    This is how Hollywood movies should be made. And I say this because this movie goes beyond the void money making cliches that the mentioned industry is accustomed to produce. This is not saying that Neill Blomkamp has discovered a whole new world of movie making (the fictional documentary style etc has been done before) he has rather made it known to general audiences (because producer Peter Jackson did LOR thus people listen) that there is more to cinema than just sex, explosions, sex (or rather marketable bodies). This is to say, "District 9" represents one of those good B movies that fail to get noticed for lack of proper funding. Because nobody cares about looking at things at the face. It seems easier for the masses to just go with the flow of constructed ideas of gender etc. and give in to animalistic impulses rather than analyze things through, you know, sex, explosions, sex...

    Probably the best movie in the last 20 years. The trailer was so intriguing yet did not show too much of the movies plot. So epic yet actually had a really good storyline and point to it. Also, there were no well known actors which ironically made the film even better for me. It was original and so well developed. 10/10. I would recommend it to everyone!
