The Williams-Norton duo works like magic.

Oh, how I wanted to like this film... but DeVito makes it impossible. Billions of talent involved, all wasted.

I really loved this dark comedy! "My step dad's not mean he's just adjusting!"
  • July 15, 2007
Severely underrated comedy withtwo top notch lead actors. The story is well done and Norton is loveable as 'Smoochy' the Rhino. Williams is even better being evil for a change and the cameos are cool too. Great story, well told and sadly overlooked. The cure for Tellytubby soaked...( read more) parents everywhere.

This movie has a wild combination of elements make an enjoyable black comedy. A tired kids' show host, Rainbow Randolph (Robin Williams), plans death to the new Purple Rhino named TV host named "Smoochy" (Edward Norton). The mob get involved, and it's literally a hit. I like all...( read more) the songs and skits; a lot of funny stuff goes on behind the scenes of the Kids' show. The ice show spectacular at the end is superb.

I didn't think that this movie was as "god aweful" as others may have claimed. Instead a fun and sophomoric fued between business rivals. cant beat the cast

This movie is #$%^ funny!!! I love the way they made fun of kids shows
  • October 28, 2009
Abrasive comedy and a very negative one as well. It simply doesn't come together as it should have. It is a disappointment, especially considering the talented cast that includes Robin Williams and Edward Norton. A misfire for sure.

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

There's so much that's just right in Danny DeVito's dark, behind-the-scenes satire of children's television that it's frustrating -- and a bit puzzling -- that the film doesn't quite work overall. full review

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

In Death to Smoochy, we don't get Williams' usual tear and a smile, just sneers and bile, and the spectacle is nothing short of refreshing. full review

March 29, 2002
Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail

The comedy Death to Smoochy is a rancorous curiosity: a movie without an apparent audience. full review

March 29, 2002
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

In all the annals of the movies, few films have been this odd, inexplicable and unpleasant. full review

Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com

Death to Smoochy is all noise with very little fun, and almost no restraint. full review

March 29, 2002
Claudia Puig, USA Today

The premise is silly enough to wring out some laughs, but the plot plays out disappointingly. full review

March 28, 2002
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

DeVito, who appears as Smoochy's devious agent, errs by pitching the performances too high, making the film feel tight and claustrophobic. full review
