Apart from Judi Dench and Juliette Binoche this film is woefully miscast. That is possibly due to the fact that it?s filmed in English when it really would have worked better as a French production, with French actors and a half decent director (he's only made one good film and t...( read more)hat was My Life as a Dog). I was looking forward to this as I quite liked the book but this is a piss poor adaptation and a fairly rubbish film.

Of course I loved it, it's a movie about chocolate...and Johnny Depp is in it!

What exactly does one say about this one? Good story, good acting, all around good movie. It paints a very nice portrait of rural France in transition, and shows the stranglehold of catholicism being broken in the 1960s - it's not necessarily the chocolate shop that does it, it's...( read more) just a microcosm of a greater social change. It questions the things we cling to in the face of change, and the reasons for resisting change. A timeless film.

Story about a sleepy village that is awakened by mysterious visitors. An unconventional mother who makes delicious chocolate and an Irish boatsman.

"Chocolat" is, well, a sweet little movie. It's presented as a children's fairytale, using the typical archetypal characters of each fable and hamfisting it's metaphors down the reader's (or viewer's) throat. In this film, as well as many like it, religion is a symbol of oppressi...( read more)on, and it's leaders are almost corrupt in their efforts of "protecting" the citizens. The chocolate in the movie is a metaphor for everything the church is not - to some, it's has the effect of an endorphin, and to others, it simply lets them embrace life's treasures all the more. While the film is often tedious and possesses no surprises, it's the cast that makes this as charming as it is. Juliette Binoche in particular, who was so great in Kieslowski's "Blue", is as charismatic and gorgeous as a female lead can be. With assistance from the likes of Alfred Molina, this is a decently satisfying light-hearted affair.

Once upon a time, there existed a little French village. Lent had just begun, but a wind from the north carried in a pair of woman travelers clad in red, Vianne (Juliette Bincohe) and her daughter, Anouk (Victoire Thivisol). Although the townspeople initially welcomed the two with open arms, their resistances began to grow when they learned that Vianne is atheist. Worse yet, she has the nerve to be opening a chocolate shop during lent. While some ignore their temptations, others are swept away as Vianne correctly predicts their favorite chocolate. And although the mayor of the town, Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), and the new Catholic priest, Pere Henri (Hugh O'Conor), do what they can to dismiss Vianne and her sinful chocolate shop - it's popularity grows as the townspeople find love and happiness with her sweets.

Vianne's shop flourishes and she begins to take in a few of the townspeople - including Josephin (Lena Olin), a victim of spousal abuse, and Amande (Judi Dench), the old woman who owns the shop Vianne is renting. She has not been on good terms with her daughter (Carrie-Anne Moss), however it's Vianne's chocolate that inspires her to make amends. Along the way, a group of river rats led by Roux (Johnny Depp) park their houseboats along the shores of the village, just outside Comte de Reynaud's jurisdiction. When Vianne and Roux fall in love, Reynaud releases that the town's long-time values and tradition are threatened by the newcomers.

Perhaps the biggest offense of "Chocolat" is how uninvolving the characters are. Vianne only works due to Binoche's talent and charisma, as any other actress with half the smile would have exposed the role for how unsatisfying it really is. Alfred Molina, who performs on par with Binoche, does what he can to expand his character outside of the confines of his caricature, and doesn't find too much success. Even the supporting cast, like Judi Dench and Johnny Depp, are severely restricted.. Roux, in particular, is as flat as a character you'll ever see, and this is perhaps the only time i've seen Johnny Depp not connect completely with the audience. The lack of a spark between Vianne and Roux certainly left a gaping hole in the heart of this movie. These are all good actors giving good performances, but they simply don't have much to do but smile.

"Chocolat" is charming in that it at all times seems glossy and glowing - it's french village reminds me of the beginning of "Life is Beautiful". Everything is picture-perfect, indeed, in that it never overcomes how artificial it all is.

But above all else, this is a children's movie with adult themes. Can you really complain about the compromised character development and phony setting in a movie that aspires only to present it's whimsical values upon the audience? One must take "Chocolat" as nothing more than a storybook, as this is perhaps as light as light-hearted material can possibly be. It's cute and serene, albeit fairly forgettable due to it's constrictions within the genre. Binoche and Molina elevate the material significantly, but it's familiar premise gets in the way of something truly engaging. If you're flipping channels, you won't be offended should you stop, but you certainly shouldn't go out of your way to see it either.

I think this was extremely overdone and got more attention than it deserved. It is an average script set in beautiful locations with romantic settings. That does not make a movie great. The acting wasn't anything special and the film making was nothing out of the ordinary.

    I love Johnny Depp,somuch!
He is good actor but he is kind!
  • November 16, 2009
Oh Johnny Depp! And Juliette Binoche isn't half bad herself.

Ogni scusa è buona per riguardarlo.
Sono quei film che fanno bene al cuore, dovrebbe esistere una categoria proprio con questo nome, film che fanno bene al cuore.

One of those whimsical concoctions that tries too hard, and goes too long, for its own good.

I came across this film on a movie channel in a hotel. I knew that I wanted to see this film for quite some time. So I watched it and I have to say it was very good and wonderfully done. The cast of characters were superb. My favorite of course was "Judi Dench" and "Juliette Binoche". I love chocolate.. which made this film a real treat to watch and enjoy. But so much more happens and takes place when strangers from the outside of the french town arrive. As the town's people itself our stuck in their ways little do they know things are about to change drastically for the better in this wonderful and touching film. 3 1/2 stars
