The true story of a group of dynamic women who bare all--or nearly all--for charity and become international celebrities as a result. The Women's Institute in Great Britain encourages the ancient skil...( read more  read more... )ls of jam-making, flower pressing, knitting and baking. So when a group of extraordinary women start looking for a new way to raise money, they decide to take the annual W.I. calendar, which normally features landscapes or flowers, and instead create something traditional--with a non-conventional twist. Behind the baked goods, the apple pressing and the flower arranging, the women are completely nude.

A sort of feminine, middle-aged version of The Full Monty. The same kind of delightful, full of great one-liners and quirky character-based comedy. Affable, amusing, and highly diverting piece of British whimsy and with two excellent lead performances from Helen Mirren and...( read more) Julie Walters. Fun and harmless.

This one has been on the backburner for so long I'd almost forgotten about it. Older women taking their clothes off? Naaah. Well, boy was I wrong. It was funny, sweet, tasteful and delightfully British. Great performances all round and to know that it's based on a true story make...( read more)s it all that more inspiring. Really nice to see Helen Mirren branch out into comedy too. Fun chick flick.

    Directed by: Nigel Cole.
Starring: Helen Mirren, Annette Crosbie, Philip Glenister, Celia Imrie, John-Paul Macleod.

Based on a true story, it follows the basic story of the group of women with added filmmaking structure, problem is it is very simplist...( read more)ic and cliched, but it works brilliantly as a feel-good British comedy.

The story follows the true story a Women's Institute in a small town in England where a group of ladies are fed up with the dull topics they cover every month, after one of the groups husbands is diagnosed with Leukemia, they decide on doing a nude calendar for charity and in the process, become international stars. Like I said before, the problem is is that it is just a little to simplistic and it follows that same cliched formula that 100's of films follow every year, but that is the only downside. We have sharp humour, brilliant one-liners and what can only be said as brilliant top-notch performances from Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, who both add charm to the film.

I certainly smiled all through the film, the humour is consistent and very sly, cheeky and certainly mature, the one-liners are hits and there are great performances to be had by all the leading females, especially Helen Mirren and Julie Walters. A charming, hilarious, feel-good comedy that just has the problem of being very formulaic and simplistic.

This movie wasn't bad at all. All of the girls were great. The story is unexpected and good.

based on a true story. Helen Mirren and Julie Walters star as Chris and Annie, who are bored and spurred into action when the latter's husband (John Alderton) dies of leukaemia. To raise money for medical research,at the hospital where he was treated, the women persuade their 50 s...( read more)omething pals to strip for a saucy charity calendar. Though initially reluctant ("No front bottoms!" begs one), the ladies agree, unwittingly creating an international phenomenon which plunges them into the media spotlight. this british film didnt exactly rock my world but it is a light hearted comedy!

Lovely movie.. stage play doesnt do it justice ... but walters and mirren were great!
  • August 16, 2009
The plot is more serious than it seems: it's about losing someone dear and doing charity to help people. Cancer stinks!
  • August 8, 2009
I give it credit for being a bit different, but it did have a lot of boring and dull bits to it.

Helen Mirren, so grim and dour in recent roles in "Gosford Park" and "Prime Detective," is positively mischievous! full review

Unlike the flowers and the women of Yorkshire, Calendar Girls hits its stride early on, and goes to seed well before we can enjoy its full bloom. full review

A heartwarmer of a story. full review

[Mirren and Walters] have the moxie and art to make you forget -- at least for stretches -- the very wobbly contrivance of the story around them. full review

[A] sweet, good-humored comedy. full review
