Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy are really good together. I enjoyed this movie, but I wish the ending had been different.

Becoming Jane is an extraordinarily beautiful period film about the life of Jane Austin. The film has a very cinematic feel which is quite captivating in and of itself. The addition of a brilliant script, outstanding acting, and dazzling costuming makes Becoming Jane a very go...( read more)od film. Hathaway and McAvoy will steal your heart.

Would have rated it lower but in fairness I checked out before the second act. Actually enjoyed the supporting performance of the actress who portrayed the cousin. However, the leads didn't draw me in to the story at all. I think the story just wasn't that interesting to me.

What a pain it was to grow up in the time of Jane Austin. All these rules around gender, class and wealth and having to learn complicated dances. Aren't we lucky we don't live in the late 18th century.

typical gooey, romantic chick flick. It was great.
  • November 20, 2009
I wished that the ending was completley different, but then the whole story would have to be changed to compliment the new ending.

"Affection is desirable. Money is absolutely indispensable!"

Good thing I don't have to live on their time, on their place and on their situation...

The setting was brilliant and Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy were so beautiful together. I just wish I could change the ending.

Once you admit that the Jane Austen depicted onscreen bears scant relation to any person named Jane Austen, living or dead, the film fulfills its purpose. full review

The movie has an immense charm that sneaks up on you. Ultimately, it's a delicate ode to love and honor -- and to writing and reading. full review

I donīt like this movie very much.
IMHO Jane Austen wasnīt like this at all..
I recomend you the movie Miss Austen Regrets. That movie is much more about Jane Austen than this one.
And I suggest .. let her be.. and letīs enjoy her great books..

James James James, oh my, James. Wow, okay, first of all, I totally dig guys that wear vests, any guys out there that are reading this, it is so not out of fashion. Long sleeve shirt, and vest, growl. Anyway, the movie was depressing because they didn't get together. James is hot, and he's got a cute personality, who wouldn't dig it? Heeellllooooo. I totally want my boyfriend to copy his hairstyle in this movie too, yummy..

sorry to post again. some people are complaining that the story isn't real. uh... duh. it's hollywood. have they ever made something that is completely true? they want to make it appealing for the audience. on that note, if you're not into movies like Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility, then you probably aren't going to like it. so consider the genre and the story before you watch it. And yes, the movie is depressing. but i think that is what made it good. if you don't like sad movies, then you probably shouldn't watch it. i'm sorry if you only like the happy movies without tears. go watch Snow White or something. if you want to enjoy a heart-wrenching film, then this is for you. and it does have some "boring" parts, but i suppose that they are only boring for people who don't have the brain capacity to understand it. keep in mind the time period that this is set in. it isn't always "skip down the lane, i'm happy!" there aren't always happy endings to life. deal with it.

This was the most awesome movie ever!!! someone said that it was a little sad... uh not my opinion. i cried the whole second half of the movie... non stop. i don't think it was a LITTLE sad. but that's my opinion. i can't believe the movie came out today!!! i can't wait to go get it! anyone who hasn't seen it really needs to. rent it and watch it. you won't be sorry. plus, James McAvoy has the most beautiful eyes... it's amazing. i am also a fan of Anne Hathaway. this is a must see!

I thought this film was lovely to watch and very light-hearted (who cares if it not completley true - Hollywood never is).
However, as much as I love Anne Hathaway I do believe James McAvoy carried the film (that may be because I go all girly when he comes on screen lol).
Also, just want to mention how un-flattering Anne Hathaway's clothes were in the film - none of the other women wore such clothes that made their figures look quite strange at times - just my opinion.
