Didn't quite live up to my high expectations...Freddie Highmore did an awesome job and I really enjoyed the opening sequence, but overall, it felt like one giant music montage...I felt like the score never stopped playing in the background, and there's a particular development in...( read more)

...I think I actually cried at the end...*must have been something in my eye is all..."
If you're not one for sentimentality then it's not for you...this is one of those rare movies you've got to go into with somewhat of a sense of surrender...if you won't allow yourself to belie...( read more) -

A great movie. The music throughout is amazing, particularly "August's Rhapsody." The story too is great, as Freddie Highmore joins a cast that turns in a beautiful and heart-felt performance. This movie is a must see.

Beautiful music, unparalleled optimism and sincere characters. A beautiful twist on creating your own destiny and forcing the hand of fate.

very cute, but as the synopsis says "with fairy tale elements" - relied to much on the whole fate thing for my liking.

Kirsten Sheridan's directorial debut is a modern-day fairy tale - a thoughtful, unabashedly sentimental and (at times) melodramatic contrivance that only the most hard-hearted cynic could turn away from. Freddie Highmore ("Finding Neverland") plays Evan, an orphan with a gift for...( read more)

I absolutely love this movie. On first glance it may look like a sappy love story, but August Rush is an uplifting story of hope and love and destiny. Not to mention the fantastic soundtrack. Freddie Highmore is a wonder, he is fantastic in this role, and Russell and Rhys-Meyers ...( read more)

The goal is to drive mothers everywhere insane with the urge to rescue him and brush his hair (or the other way around), and in my case it worked. full review
I dislike sentimentality where it doesn't belong, but there's something brave about the way August Rush declares itself and goes all the way with coincidence, melodrama and skillful tear-jerking. full review
It can be admired for trying something a little different from the usual family film, but in the end, it just doesn't work. At all. full review
If Charles Dickens were alive today, he might be writing projects like August Rush, the unabashedly sentimental tale of a plucky orphan lad who falls in with streetwise urchins as he seeks the family ... full review

May 26, 2008Listen you dont have to like the movie but dont ruin it for everyone else!
i personally LOVED this movie. JRM was hot, i love freddie highmore and keri russell was incredible! not to mention the story! it was so amazing! i didnt cry but i was shaking for a good 10 minutes after the credits were over!
and to those unbelievers:
would you say that oliver twist was a(and i quote) "sentimental, syrupy, puke filled drivel" because in case you were wondering all august rush is and was is a remake of oliver twist! -

May 25, 2008It was awful! What a sentimental, syrupy, puke filled drivel this was. Even it's knowledge of music instruments was below any IQ.
I'm sorry, there is certain sentimentality i can take, but spilling my guts out in the aisle says it all. This film was more gruesome than any other horror film i saw that year. Forget idiots who go in to see Saw 3 and have the St. John's Ambulence come to their aid, this is good reason to reach for the defibrillator. -

March 31, 2008I totally love this movie. This is by far the most amazing and cute movie I have seen. It’s a really good family movie. I can’t usually get into movies but this one involves music. The movie soundtrack is lovely, I’m going to get the sound track as soon as possible. I recommend this movie to anyone who loves music. I also seen my art in the movie, the violin that evolving into a tree, it represents life in music.
