Didn't quite live up to my high expectations...Freddie Highmore did an awesome job and I really enjoyed the opening sequence, but overall, it felt like one giant music montage...I felt like the score never stopped playing in the background, and there's a particular development in...( read more) Robin Williams' role that I wasn't expecting nor did I particularly enjoy. Once again, I enjoyed the trailer more than the movie itself.

...I think I actually cried at the end...*must have been something in my eye is all..."
If you're not one for sentimentality then it's not for you...this is one of those rare movies you've got to go into with somewhat of a sense of surrender...if you won't allow yourself to belie...( read more)ve in the infallibility of the main characters then you'll think the film no more than an over dramatic, thinly drawn tear-jerker...which is how most adults may already perceive it to be, so needless to say, this film maybe more suited to those of us who linger in the "in-between" years...

A great movie. The music throughout is amazing, particularly "August's Rhapsody." The story too is great, as Freddie Highmore joins a cast that turns in a beautiful and heart-felt performance. This movie is a must see.

Beautiful music, unparalleled optimism and sincere characters. A beautiful twist on creating your own destiny and forcing the hand of fate.

very cute, but as the synopsis says "with fairy tale elements" - relied to much on the whole fate thing for my liking.

Kirsten Sheridan's directorial debut is a modern-day fairy tale - a thoughtful, unabashedly sentimental and (at times) melodramatic contrivance that only the most hard-hearted cynic could turn away from. Freddie Highmore ("Finding Neverland") plays Evan, an orphan with a gift for...( read more) creating music based on the confluence of sounds he hears around him. He is convinced his parents - an Irish guitarist (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) and a concert cellist (Keri Russell) - are still alive and could find him if they could only hear his music. He runs from the orphanage he grows up in, pursued by a kind case worker (Terrence Howard) and comes to New York City, only to be scooped up by the Wizard (Robin Williams), an exploitation artist who runs an unofficial home for young street performers in an abandoned theater. Renamed "August Rush," Evan takes to the streets, hoping to some day make the music that will draw his parents to him. This owes way more than a bit to Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist," with Williams playing the Fagin-role and August the proverbial Oliver, but there are some differences. Nevertheless, this is a well-made and just plain nice film from the daughter of the great Irish filmmaker Jim Sheridan.

I absolutely love this movie. On first glance it may look like a sappy love story, but August Rush is an uplifting story of hope and love and destiny. Not to mention the fantastic soundtrack. Freddie Highmore is a wonder, he is fantastic in this role, and Russell and Rhys-Meyers ...( read more)are beautiful together. This is a really stunning film.

Claudia Puig, USA Today

August Rush will not be for everyone, but it works if you surrender to its lilting and unabashedly sentimental tale of evocative music and visual poetry. full review

Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle

The goal is to drive mothers everywhere insane with the urge to rescue him and brush his hair (or the other way around), and in my case it worked. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

I dislike sentimentality where it doesn't belong, but there's something brave about the way August Rush declares itself and goes all the way with coincidence, melodrama and skillful tear-jerking. full review

Pete Hammond, Maxim

It can be admired for trying something a little different from the usual family film, but in the end, it just doesn't work. At all. full review

Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

If Charles Dickens were alive today, he might be writing projects like August Rush, the unabashedly sentimental tale of a plucky orphan lad who falls in with streetwise urchins as he seeks the family ... full review

    and to those unbelievers:

It was awful! What a sentimental, syrupy, puke filled drivel this was. Even it's knowledge of music instruments was below any IQ.

I'm sorry, there is certain sentimentality i can take, but spilling my guts out in the aisle says it all. This film was more gruesome than any other horror film i saw that year. Forget idiots who go in to see Saw 3 and have the St. John's Ambulence come to their aid, this is good reason to reach for the defibrillator.

I totally love this movie. This is by far the most amazing and cute movie I have seen. It’s a really good family movie. I can’t usually get into movies but this one involves music. The movie soundtrack is lovely, I’m going to get the sound track as soon as possible. I recommend this movie to anyone who loves music. I also seen my art in the movie, the violin that evolving into a tree, it represents life in music.
