Great film, DeNiro?s Satan is superb. Whatever happened to Lisa Bonet?

I'm not in the least surprised that other reviewers either love this or hate it to bits - I also bet that it's the younger users to whom the nature of the visual narrative of the film - the way it's all told to us, the viewer - may seem a bit dated. And to a point, they're right ...( read more)- "Angel Heart" is totally an eighties film, a film of the decade in which the movie world was discovering a new visual language in video and playfully indulged in experimenting with its new toy. It was literally speaking to a generation straight out of MTV classrooms and workshops and is in that sense very similar to stuff like "Betty Blue". And true enough, there is a lot to remark on what can today be seen as a slightly poseur-ish "one too many revolving fans, angularly lit staircases and heartbeat sounds in the soundtrack" kind of thing. However, "Angel Heart" does carry a tremendous amount of energy thanks to its imagery, which will stick to the viewer's mind in exactly the same way a sweaty shirt sticks to the body in sticky weather. Besides, the impeccably drawn cast led by Rourke does a truly remarkable job - that's beyond question - the sets are great, production design and cinematography are very evocative, the soundtrack is memorable and the story is one of the crucial ones. I personally love it.

Give it a go by all means.

Detective Angel (Mickey Rourke) is hired by a mysterious, sartorial client (Robert De Niro) to track down a missing man, and the search leads him to new Orleans and a voodoo cult. Supernatural film noir with a very chilling twist, if you don't guess it early on.

Alan Parker is one of those guys that doesn't try to do the same thing twice (the guy did The Wall for Christ sakes). What he does with Angel Heart is take a well worn formula (the gum shoe detective) and give it a bit of a twist (supernatural voodoo) that gives us a film that ke...( read more)eps us riveted as we follow Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) from Brooklyn to New Orleans to Hell.

Angel is hired by the mysterious Louis Cypher (Robert DeNiro who seems to have transformed into Scorsese on coke) to find a mysterious musician who owes him a debt. The simple plot follows Angel through many places and many corpses until the revelation is uncovered.

Simple. Yet complex. You sit through most of the film thinking it's a basic private dick dick, but it soon becomes more complicated than that. That's why the film works. The script is good, though there are some scenes that seem to need prodding along. Parker's world is dirty, but not dark. He shines the light on the dirt, keeping the film from going to noirish. Rourke and DeNiro are great with DeNiro playing a true Cypher throughout the film.

Overall Angel Heart is another great piece of film making from Alan Parker. The film does have a twist ending before we expected twist endings that is still a bit predictable, but the ride getting there is always half the fun.

An all-around cool movie, Angel Heart boasts that same surreal, creepy feeling as Jacob's Ladder. Unlike Jacob's Ladder, though, Angel Heart's story is a very easy one to guess, despite its twists. Still, the excellent acting, moody atmosphere and quirky characters make it a gr...( read more)eat flick overall. Check it out.

I will start this by saying that after watching the wrestler, I was interested in Mr Rourke's work and thought I would re visit this movie.. I am away from home working in New Orleans and it was so strange to see some of the very places I have been visiting during my work here in...( read more) the movie.. The St. Charles street car that I see almost daily, the red door lounge that is still here.. This movie was made in the 80's but still I was amazed at how well Mickey Rourke was in the movie as well as a fine performance by Robert De Niro.. Well worth a watch even if it was long by today's standards...
