No matter whom we are, no matter where we live, we're all bound by borders. Many of us are content to live within these borders--others are simply forced to exist within them. But some of us need to b...( read more  read more... )reak out, burst through, even if what is on the other side is both frightening and unknown. From this comes the tale of one young man's dilemma as he navigates his way through his colliding worlds. Set against Detroit's hip-hop scene in 1995, the story centers on Jimmy Smith Jr., a young white rapper, who struggles to find his voice. The people of Detroit know '8 Mile' as the city limit or a border. It is also a psychological dividing line that separates Jimmy from where and who he wants to be, as he struggles to find the strength and courage to transcend his boundaries.

A very good, solid film about a young white rapper, trying to cut it on the rap scene in Detroit. Seems loosely based on Eminem's background? There is a good supporting cast especially by Kim Basinger playing his mum. This will surprise a lot of people as it's not the the type of...( read more) film most will expect it to be. Eminem plays the role well. Even if you're not a fan of his music or rap in general this is still a watchable film about someone trying to better themselves and break away from their humble surroundings.

There will no doubt be many people who have passed this film up either because they do like Eminem or they do not like the Hip-hop scene in general and I would say that would be a fair reason, you would at least have to like the Hip-Hop scene a little to enjoy this film.

What ...( read more)this film does show is the reality of how a rapper goes about making a name for themselves and the seriousness of competition in trying to be the best.

In fairness those who expect Eminem to be loud, brash and egotistical in this film will be proved wrong, he actually takes on the role with almost a shy inward persona and although there may be similarities to his own journey to the top, the plot is ficticious and an interesting story.

For fans ? The extras are worth taking a look at if it's possible, as it shows all the behind the scenes, plus battles whereby Eminem takes on some of Detroits local freestylers.

OK, yeah, I get it. He's just another kid who 'made it'. The movie is so narcissistic it's kind of funny. Which is exactly the point. He promotes himself so much you'll kill yourself. Not that this was intended, of course (snort/cough/shake head).

Worth watching just for the so...( read more)ng 'Lose Yourself', to see why EMinem got an Oscar he didn't deserve. But, if you want to enjoy the rest of the movie, watch when you have well exceeded your alcohol allowance, if you're the type. I'm not, so maybe I should have skipped it the first time round. Unlike Get Rich or Die Tryin', there's no Terrence Howard to brighten the day.

David Edelstein, Slate

There are a lot of stale -- and nefarious -- clichés in 8 Mile (Universal), but most of the time they're overwhelmed by the pulsing, grinding, hopped-up camerawork and the soulful star turn of Eminem. full review

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

The triumph here is that Hanson and screenwriter Scott Silver have found a fresh way to tell this story. full review

Can Eminem act? Who knows? But his star turn in 8 Mile, as an aspiring rapper growing up poor and white in Motown, is memorable -- even if we've seen it all before. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

We are hardly started in 8 Mile, and already we see that this movie stands aside from routine debut films by pop stars ... Like Prince's Purple Rain, it is the real thing. full review

November 7, 2002
Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer

8 Mile should satisfy Eminem's legion of fans and, at the same time, affirms rap's power as an artform, as real beat poetry, for the uninitiated -- and even for the actively resistant. full review

November 6, 2002
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Qualifies as a cinematic event by tapping into the roots of Eminem and the fury and feeling that inform his rap. full review
