The Most Disturbing Films
This is a list of some of the most disturbing, vile, cruel, and gut wrenching films that I have ever come across. Some are on this list for just blatant gore and others are on it due to sadistic torture, blatant cannibalism and sometimes even sexual crimes. These are the movies that you read about on the internet and wonder whether you should watch them or not. For some of these movies the answer is yes, watch it. To truly understand an art form such as film one must delve into the dark side from time to time. Some of these films are hard to watch and or sit through. Many of these films are very controversial and some are virtually unknown. The only thing that they have in common is that they can be construed as deeply disturbing in one way or another. Some of the films are listed as (edited version), when watching the films on this list always go for the unrated or un-edited versions whenever available for the full effect of the film.

Salo (Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma) (1979, NC-17)
This film is utterly transcendant. It takes everything and turns it upside down. The deepest depths of depravity are reached with the greatest of ease in this film. You utterly cannot believe what you are watching as it happens. As an avid fan of the artform of film I watched this movie because of its artistic and historical signifigance as probably the single most disturbing movie ever made. The assault that this movie thrusts upon its viewer is at first a feeling of disgust that grows into indescribeable outrage at what you are viewing up until the shocking and bitterly horrific end of this film. Despite the controversy that surrounded him the director Pier Paolo Pasolini is a master at his artform and due to its uniqueness this is one of his more widely recognized films. THIS FILM IS NOT FOR THE EASILY OFFENDED OR PEOPLE WITH WEAK STOMACHS! It is meant to be a shocking and controversial piece of art and no matter how desensitized our society gets this will always be what it is meant to be, shocking! |

August Underground's Mordum (2003, Unrated)
Okay now after watching the first August Underground movie you know what to expect from the second one right? Wrong, this movie completely tops its predecessor utterly and completely to the point where I dont even want to waste brain cells trying to talk it up (or down). It is done on the same grainy and hard to deal with jerky camera style filming. It is hard to watch and is without a doubt one of the most disgusting, vile, disturbing, and truly scary movies ever made. All the rules that I told you about the first one apply double here. Look at it as an incredibly sick piece of fiction and you will do fine. Suspend any disbelief and you may find yourself pulling a Charlie Sheen (turning the movie into the MPAA and then the Police). |

Aftermath (1994, Unrated)
Whenever I hear about a "shocking" or "unbelievable" film on the internet or on Imdb I usually take a look and see what its about, this film is an example of one such instance. The film Aftermath was a short film made by Nacho Cerda in 1994. It was the second film made by Cerda in his directorial career. The film begins deep in the bowels of a Spanish morgue. In the morgue there is an autopsy-taking place, right before our very eyes. The film is devoid of any real dialogue and focuses on the use of graphic shocking imagery to make its point. The film starts with the average goings on in a morgue. The other morticians call it a day and leave one behind to finish up his work. This is when the film gets uncomfortably vile and disturbing. |

Angst (Fear) (1983, Unrated)
The film Angst by Director Gerald Kargl is a beautifully shot film and rightfully so. The camera work is flawless although somewhat unsettling. The cinematographer behind the camera was none other than Zbigniew Rybczynski a filmmaker who had won an Oscar two years prior for his short film, Tango. The beauty of the film aside, this is one of the most disturbing films ever put to celluloid. |

Antropophagus (The Zombie's Rage)(The Grim Reaper)(Anthropophagous: The Beast) (1980, R)
The Grim Reaper as this movie was called in English film markets was director Joe D'Amato's first true foray into the horror genre. Previously he had made Sexploitation horror movies, which were big during the 70s. Although being his first true horror film this film will forever go down into the annals of horror history as one of the more sick and twisted works ever to be released. The plot of this movie revolves around a group of tourists that are taking their vacation on a small Greek island. Once they arrive on the island they discover that it has been totally deserted. The only person upon the island that they come across is a blind girl who doesn?t know what has happened to the rest of the townspeople but does describe a man who has interacted with her, she says that he smells of blood and is frightened of him. |

Audition (Ôdishon) (1999, R)
This movie has the most sharp turn of any movie I have ever seen, period. This is not just one of the most disturbing movies ever; it is also one of the best-executed shocking movie climaxes ever put to screen. When I was recommended this movie by a friend he said, ?all I can say is that it is a romantic drama that loses its way and goes horribly wrong at the end?. Now having heard of Takashi Miike before and looking over some of his VAST (around 200 movies and he is still making more) catalogue, I knew that I should expect some thing next level messed up and I still wasn?t prepared for what came next. |

August Underground (2001, Unrated)
This movie is truly sick and twisted and after watching it I felt dirty for about a week. The fact that the movie is done on a grainy very messed up camera does little to keep one from wanting to vomit from the get go with this film. As I watched this I had to tell myself a couple of times that this movie is not real. The suspension of disbelief that one usually has when watching a film goes out the damn window with this one because if it didn?t then you would truly think that you were watching a snuff film. |

August Underground's Penance (2007, Unrated)
Finally Director Fred Vogel decided that three of these celluloid shit stains were enough. Although he goes out with a bang, (and it isn't a good one either. Imagine the previous two ?August Underground? movies in digital clarity where you can see all of the gore effects, rape, and depravity in all their glory. That is something that I don?t want to imagine, but it is what I got with this final entry into the most gross film trilogy ever. |

The Baby of Mâcon (1993, Unrated)
The thing that you must consider when watching the film The Baby of Macon is that it isn't just another disturbing film, its delivery and cinematography are masterful to say the least. The set design is also quite good, the only thing against it is the content. Like most of director Peter Greenaway's other films, The Baby of Macon includes a lot of very disturbing ideas and concepts. The story begins as a play within a play, this concept is so well executed that when watching the movie it is very hard to understand what he wanted to convey as real and what is supposed to be the play. |

E tu vivrai nel terrore - L'aldilà (The Beyond) (1981, Unrated)
Say what you will about this film but this is a great zombie movie but the film doesn't start out that way. The film begins as a gorey haunted house story about the spirit of a murderd artist killing people in the basement of a New Orleans house but it soon then descends into a story that lacks logic but is still enjoyable. As far as Zombie movies that are trippy go this one is by far the best ever. I must admit that this is my favorite film that I have seen by Lucio Fulci as well. The gore in the death scenes of this movie were just so over the top and so much fun. The bleak ending was just the icing on the top of a very nasty and awesome cake for me. I genuinely love this movie! |

Like most of Peter Jackson's early work this film finds a way to balance completely over the top gore with extremely funny content as well. Even the gore itself can be so over the top that it is funny. It is hard to believe that this is the same guy who made almost a billion dollars on "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy. I really enjoy his early stuff like "Dead Alive", "Bad Taste", and "Meet the Feebles" just as much as I enjoyed "Lord of the Rings" and hope to enjoy "The Hobbit". |

Santa sangre (Holy Blood) (1990, NC-17)
This movie was crazy in the best possible way. The intensity of the barrage of disturbing imagery was at an all time high with this classic gem. Jodorowsky's work in this film is highlighted due to the fact that unlike many of his other films this one was filmed in Italy. This film plays out like a kind of Psychadelic Giallo with intense surreal imagery mixed in for good measure. The ending to this movie is a huge surprise as well. But the part of the movie that I enjoyed the most was the relationship between Fenix and Alma. It proves that even in the darkest places redemption can be found in love. |

This is the second and is also the darkest and most twisted film of Park's entire "vengeance trilogy". Nothing is taboo in this heavily complicated yet captivating film. As you watch it you realize that it is just so beautifully shot for such an ugly subject mattered movie. It crosses all boundaries and breaks every taboo, yet still keeps ahold of you with amazing writing and gorgeous cinematography. It grabs ahold of you and doesn't let go, it is an amazing artistic achievement. |
