Le Voyage dans la lune (A Trip to the Moon) (1902,  Unrated)
Le Voyage dans la lune (A Trip to the Moon)
Probably the first motion picture with a story. Very resourceful and imaginative.
2
Un Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog) (1929,  Unrated)
Un Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog)
A milestone, the first surreal film. Buñuel and Dalí sliced an eye ball and opened a gate of boundless imagination.

4
The Great Train Robbery (1903,  Unrated)
5
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (1962,  Unrated)
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
A masterful take on the story by Ambrose Bierce. The relatively unknown french director Robert Enrico merged all the right elements to conjure up a cinematic experience that overflows purity. A magical story, astonishing imagery and no dialogue.
6
Le Ballon Rouge (The Red Balloon) (1956,  Unrated)
Le Ballon Rouge (The Red Balloon)
Sweet fantasy that, like all great fables, takes us back to the best years of our lives.
7
Roundhay Garden Scene (,  Unrated)
Roundhay Garden Scene
Only 2 seconds of what is considered the first motion picture. amazing achievement
8
Vincent (1982,  G)
9
The Big Shave (1967,  Unrated)
The Big Shave
Gripping, bloody and basic early attempt by Scorsese
10
The Crimson Permanent Assurance (1983,  Unrated)
The Crimson Permanent Assurance
A blast of a short, pure Python/Gilliam cheerful madness.
11
Frankenweenie (1984,  PG)
12
Mirindas Asesinas (1991,  Unrated)
Mirindas Asesinas
One of the most pleasing samples of Alex De la iglesia's wacky universe. Shocking, gory and hilarious situation inside a bar, when its weirdest customer starts picking up fights for the most uncommon stuff. Apocalyptic black humour at its best.
13
Ssaki (Mammals) (1963,  Unrated)
Ssaki (Mammals)
Charming slapstick comedy against a beautiful snowy backdrop. It features probably the greatest score Krzysztof Komeda ever wrote for any Polanski short film, following each action and reaction of the two men who are trying to reach some point, equipped only with one sled and lots of selfishness.
14
Gros et le maigre (The Fat and the Lean) (1961,  Unrated)
Gros et le maigre (The Fat and the Lean)
Probably the funniest Polanski short. Another slapstick comedy, this time with Polanski himself as the servant-slave of a tyrannic fatso.
15
Dwaj ludzie z szafa (Two Men and a Wardrobe) (1958,  Unrated)
Dwaj ludzie z szafa (Two Men and a Wardrobe)
funny and imaginative surreal comedy. Many years before his cameo appearance in Chinatown, Polanski played a short, menacing gang leader here. good score by Krzysztof Komeda.
16
Lampa (The Lamp) (1959,  Unrated)
Lampa (The Lamp)
A sort of nostalgic exhibition inside a toy store. Polanski proved he could accomplish a total dominion of space.
17
Gdy spadaja anioly (When Angels Fall Down) (1959,  Unrated)
Gdy spadaja anioly (When Angels Fall Down)
The first in color and non-linear storyline, hence the most artistically pretentious among Roman Polanski's short films, and he had to make it that way, because this was his graduation thesis.
18
Rozbijemy zabawe... (Break Up the Dance) (1957,  Unrated)
Rozbijemy zabawe... (Break Up the Dance)
fun cinéma vérité. Young Polanski also had a wicked sense of humour and the fixed purpose of showing us misery anywhere we look.
19
Morderstwo (A Murderer) (1957,  Unrated)
Morderstwo (A Murderer)
The simple art of murder. The unflinching Roman Polanski proves for the first time he is one of the masters of atmosphere and creepiness.

Zero de Conduite (,  Unrated)
Zero de Conduite
A solemn and sincere poem to anarchy.
21
Simón del desierto (Simon of the Desert) (1965,  Unrated)

26
Meshes of the Afternoon (1943,  Unrated)
27
Carne (1991,  Unrated)
Carne
The story of the deranged french butcher began with this short film that displays every single trademark of the pretentious filmmaker Gaspar Noe, the prominent use of black and red, the disturbing presence of Philippe Nahon, titlecards, explicit carnage, sexuality and gutter language. definitely not for the squeamish.
28

Lumière et compagnie (Lumière and Company) (Premonition Following An Evil Deed) (1996,  Unrated)
34
The Hearts of Age (1934,  Unrated)
The Hearts of Age
Orson Welles' first film. A short that answered to the styles that were in vogue those days, particularly to Buñuel and Cocteau. Vague but interesting.
35
Mabel's Married Life (The Squarehead) (When You're Married) (1914,  PG)
36
Alicia (1994,  Unrated)
Alicia
Powerful visuals, but no story to sustain it. For the fans of weird midnight movies like eraserhead.
37
Within the Woods (1978,  Unrated)
Within the Woods
Sam Raimi's ultra low budget first attempt of 'the evil dead'. In fact, Raimi made this short in order to earn some money and invest it in a full lenght version of it. This fun gore fest has some of his distinctive visual procedures and a very simple story that was later expanded in his first feature, with most of the same cast.

The bastard child of Luis Buñuel and Aleister Crowley. Great score and pagan imagery.
45
A Dog's Life (1918,  Unrated)
46
La Cabina (The Phone Box) (The Telephone Box) (1972,  Unrated)
La Cabina (The Phone Box) (The Telephone Box)
Masterpiece of Spanish cinema. Acid, surreal and terrifying. A holy trinity of Hitchcock, Kafka and Orwell would be proud.
