Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001,  R)
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
It's a musical, with rock music. What more could you ask for? Throw in a botched sex change operation and amazing words of poetry and you just begin to understand what this movie is about.
2
Shortbus (2006,  Unrated)
Shortbus
At first the gratuitous sex seems shocking and just too much, but once you get past the initial shock, you'll find a much deeper story and a film treatment that manages to desensitize you to all the sex going on film.
3
Camp (2003,  PG-13)
Camp
This was an amazing movie! It's all about raw talent this time around given a largely unknown cast which brought out stellar performances. While the story is a tad simple, the music is really what carries this piece through. a must-see for any true fan of musical theater.
4
Latter Days (2004,  Unrated)
Latter Days
I think every gay man has had at least one fantasy involving those cute Mormons walking all over town and this movie helps bring that to life. It's a rather striking story, moreso because of the stellar performance by Steve Sandvoss, who is unbelievable cute, too!
5
Luster (2002,  Unrated)
Luster
I liked this movie a lot despite how weird it was. The story was edgy, complicated and yet strangely poetic. No real big name actors, just a story excuted rather well.
6
Kinky Boots (2006,  PG-13)
Kinky Boots
This movie was great! I had never heard about it until I saw it was showing at the cinema and it was worth the time and money. Light, humorous and witty - think Full Monty meets Pricilla Queen of the Desert or something.
7
Eating Out (2004,  Unrated)
Eating Out
The guys were hot. The story was good. The writing was funny and the execution was decent. Oh, and did I mention the guys were hot?
8
Touch of Pink (2004,  R)
Touch of Pink
This was too funny to be believed! I don't really go for Inidian guys, but the writing of this particular story had me laughing for most of the movie.
9
Transamerica (2005,  R)
Transamerica
This was very good movie, although I doubt the subject matter will sit well with everyone. Then again, should I be happy Felicity Huffman plays a pre-transsexual very well?
10
The Birdcage (1996,  R)
The Birdcage
This was a really funny movie. You can't go wrong with such a solid script to begin with, amazing actors and large numbers of people in drag!
11
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975,  R)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Campy beyond words, you really have to see it to believe it. Probably one of the first movies to tackle transvestites, homosexuality, cannibalism and many other strange ideas all at the same time.
12
Bedrooms and Hallways (1999,  Unrated)
Bedrooms and Hallways
Sort of weird but smart and rather well thought-out. The story is highly dynamic and rather gripping once you get past the first hump.
13
The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green (2006,  R)
The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green
This was a surprisingly good movie, considering the relatively lower quality level when it comes down to queer-targeted films these days. I've never read the web comic before, but seeing the movie makes me want to try it out, which demonstrates how well-crafted the film was. An entertaining movie for any queer-loving person.
14
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994,  R)
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
This was an amazing movie, the scale of which was rather expansive. The writing was good but the imagery created in the movie was beyond amazing.
15
Notes on a Scandal (2006,  R)
16
Brokeback Mountain (2005,  R)
17
Ba wang bie ji (Farewell My Concubine) (1993,  R)
18
All Over The Guy (2001,  R)
All Over The Guy
Another romantic gay comedy. How many of these can we go through. While this movie isn't bad per se, it's not all that much distinct either. Still, at least it's moderately entertaining.
19
The Broken Hearts Club (2000,  R)
The Broken Hearts Club
This movie was okay, but not much more than that. I liked the treatment in terms of all the definitions of queer terms in-between segments, but beyond that the story was a bit cliche.
20
Cowboys & Angels (2003,  Unrated)
Cowboys & Angels
This story was rather smart, although a bit complicated to a fault, it's hard to put my finger on it precisely. Despite that, it's worth a second look.
21
The Iron Ladies (Satree lek) (2001,  Unrated)
The Iron Ladies (Satree lek)
This Thai comedic portrayal of a transvestite volleyball team was surprisingly good and quite refreshing amongst LGBT movies out there today.
22
Formula 17 (2005,  Unrated)
23
Walk on Water (2005,  Unrated)
Walk on Water
This movie was highly dramatic and rather slow at points, but overall it was rather good.
24
Hate Crime (2005,  R)
25
His Secret Life (Le Fate ignoranti) (2001,  R)
26
Saving Face (2005,  R)
Saving Face
A nice movie dealing with a strange lesbian romance of sorts. The actors are rather skilled despite the language barrier for me.
27
Die Mommie Die! (2003,  R)
Die Mommie Die!
On a whim I decided to give this movie a shot after a friend had recommended it some time back and it had been sitting in my GLBT movie collection for sometime. I was certainly surprised once the film started and was generally pleased with the result.

Sure, it's not the kind of film that's going to win any Oscars, but that's not why it was created. At its core it's a comedy presented dramatically, an homage to the era of Bette Davis films when women were stronger in different ways and had to be gifted with some of the best one-liners ever. It's campy beyond belief complete with hammy acting and a drag queen at the center of it all, and in that sense it does amazingly well as a film of its kind.

You're either going to love it or hate it, really. Should you decide to watch it, try to appreciate it what it is and not for what you expect it to be.

Grande Ecole (2004,  Unrated)
Grande Ecole
This was a very artistic film, and because of that parts of the movie leave you a bit confused.
29
Ma femme... s'appelle Maurice, (My Wife Maurice) (2002,  Unrated)
30
Torch Song Trilogy (1988,  R)
Torch Song Trilogy
This was nice, light, although not excessively moving. It was just fun seeing Matthew Broderick in a queer role, too, haha.
31
Love! Valour! Compassion! (1997,  R)
Love! Valour! Compassion!
This was rather so-so. Based on a play of the same name, the story did seem a bit built more for theater than for film.
32
Sugar (2004,  R)
Sugar
While the production value won't really do much for you, this was a pretty striking story if not a bit disturbing.
33
Adam & Steve (2005,  Unrated)
Adam & Steve
This was a very light comedy and I stress that term excessively. A bit weird in some parts, at least they didn't resort to too much gross-out humor.
34
The Fluffer (2003,  R)
The Fluffer
Where did the hours of my life go while watching this movie? Not at all good and the story was just whack.
35
First Love and Other Pains (1999,  Unrated)
First Love and Other Pains
This film was a bit disturbing and I was surprised with how short it was as well.
36
To the Extreme (In extremis) (2000,  Unrated)
To the Extreme (In extremis)
This movie was, well, weird. Oh, and very French. But it wasn't too much of a waste of time to see.
37
Denied (2004,  Unrated)
Denied
This movie was rather bad. It was slow, the story didn't make sense and it was really, really slow. Did I mention it was slow?
38
Ethan Mao (2004,  Unrated)
Ethan Mao
Some people really liked this movie. I just thought it was rather weird since the acting had much to be desired.
39
Another Gay Movie (2006,  Unrated)
Another Gay Movie
This was an attempt at being campy which turned into a horrible, horrible movie. If you do laugh, you'll immediately regret doing so.
40
Get Real (1999,  R)
41
Beautiful Thing (1996,  R)
42
Before Night Falls (2000,  R)
43
The History Boys (2006,  R)
The History Boys
A surprisingly good movie that feels like a smarter and lighter version of Dead Poet's Society with sexual themes added in.
44
Sun Kissed (2006,  Unrated)
Sun Kissed
This felt more like an ambitious film than a good one. Clearly aiming for the raw indie feel, Sun Kissed tried to seem smarter than it actually was by stepping outside the norms of continuity and tried running the story as a train-of-consciousness piece that just ended up being confusing.
45
Ice Men (2004,  Unrated)
Ice Men
It's the gay movie that's not quite a gay movie.

Sure, there's a gay character and there is a gay sex scene but it's not the core of the story, which is certainly interesting. The story really does center around these five old friends and how they discover how much their lives have changed.

It's a smart piece, although at times the acting is a bit hammy and the interaction a bit awkward. Still, the film grows on you and the writing is certainly interesting if only for all the extreme situations they put the characters in. Talk about coming out of left field!
46
Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds (2006,  Unrated)
Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds
This sequel to the indie GLBT hit was pretty fun and not overly heavy in the gray matter realm. While it was sad that some of the original cast couldn't return for the sequel and yet their characters remained in the story, it was still pretty fun.

Oh, and did I mention this seemed a lot hotter than the last one? Who said they shouldn't make sequels to queer flicks? =P
47
Imagine Me & You (2006,  R)
Imagine Me & You
I thought this movie was absolutely brilliant - not just another run-of-the-mill LGBT piece that is trying to be smarter than it is. Hardly so, this movie IS as smart as it presents itself to be and more!

It's a new spin on the whole love-at-first-sight story with a twist unlike most others, which is what makes it worthwhile. The writing behind this is top-notch, but perhaps I'm saying that because I tend to appreciate the dry sarcastic humor of British films and television. If that's not your cup of tea, this may not necessarily work for you.

If you want a fresh look at romance and how such things can effectively work, then this is the movie for you.

Oh, and Matthew Goode is charming as hell!

Eleven Men Out (Strakarnir okkar) (2006,  R)
49
Connie And Carla (2004,  PG-13)
Connie And Carla
I honestly liked this movie and often find myself watching it over and over again when I'm feeling down. I guess there's just something about experiencing all those musicals in such fun and entertaining bits.

While this movie won't change your life or make you think in new ways, it will make you smile and help anyone who appreciates the campiness of show tunes and musicals in general have some honest to goodness fun.
