The Las Vegas, Nevada-born actor made his début in the film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (2004) as Intern #1, and now he is best known for his role as the young genius Dr. Spencer Reid in the CBS television show Criminal Minds. Coincidentally, his character on the show was also born and raised in Las Vegas. He also had a small role in RV as the disreputed Joe Joe. Gubler also worked as a model before becoming an actor. He has worked with DNA Model Management, Tommy Hilfiger, and numerous fashion designers. Matthew was interning for Wes Anderson at the same time he was modeling, and Wes encouraged him to audition for a part in his movie "The Life Aquatic". Gubler did, and landed the role of Intern #1.
Before graduating from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, he had already created several movies that were mostly filmed in his hometown of Las Vegas as well as New York City. His own films often deal with the macabre which may have foreshadowed his machete work in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.
He is the brother to fashion designer Laura Dahl.

His Grandfather Maxwell Kelch was the first president of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and founded Las Vegas' first radio station (KENO). Gubler's sister Laura Dahl is an accomplished fashion designer who is based in New York city.
