Goldie's Early Life
Goldie Jean Hawn was born November 21, 1945 in Washington, D.C. and grew up in the suburbs of Takoma, Park, Maryland. She is the daughter of Laura Steinhoff, a jewelry shop/dance school owner, and Edward Rutledge Hawn, a band musician. Goldie has a sister, Patricia, and a brother, Edward, who died before she was born.
Goldie's father was a Presbyterian, and Hawn's mother was Jewish. Goldie was raised as Jewish, although now she is a practicing Buddhist. At the age of three, Goldie took ballet and tap lessons. In 1961, she made her stage debut in in a Virginia Shakespeare Festival production of Romeo and Juliet, playing Juliet. Goldie graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1963. Hawn attended the American University majoring in drama only to drop out. After dropping out of college, she ran and instructed a ballet school at the age of 19. In 1964, she began working as a professional dancer. A year later she appeared as a go-go dancer in New York City.
Goldie's Acting Career
After moving to California, Hawn's acting career began in 1967 with Good Morning, World. She only appeared in two episodes, with her role being that of a radio disc jockey. She was stereotyped as having a "dumb blonde" personality. Goldie's next role would be her big breakthrough. It brought her international attention. She was cast as a regular in 1968 on the comedy sketch show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. She was mostly noted for her bikini, painted body, and high pitched giggle.
Goldie's first supporting role came in 1969, where her role in Cactus Flower earned her an Academy Award for best supporting actress. She played opposite of
Walter Matthau and Ingrid Bergman. Following her big win, Goldie's film career took off and she gained many roles.
During the 70's, Hawn appeared in many films, starting with There's a Girl in My Soup (1970), $ (1971), Butterflies Are Free (1972), Shampoo (1975), and Foul Play (1978) along side Chevy Chase, among many other films.
In 1980 Private Benjamin was Goldie's big box office hit where she also served as producer of the film. She also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Musical/Comedy. Box office success continued for Hawn during the 80's with comedy films like Seems Like Old Times in 1982, Swing Shift in 1984, Protocol in 1984, and Wildcats in 1986. In 1985, Goldie posed for the cover of Playboy's January issue, which went on to be one of highest selling issues. She posed in a giant martini glass wearing nothing but a white collar shirt, black tie, and a pair of red stilettos. The headline on the cover read: "A SPARKLING PLAYBOY INTERVIEW WITH GOLDIE HAWN". After filming Overboard in 1987 opposite with her partner Kurt Russell her career slowed down.
Goldie's career boosted back up in 1992, when she appeared opposite of Bruce Willis and Meryl Streep in the film Death Becomes Her. In the same year,
she appeared opposite with Steve Martin in the successful comedy HouseSitter. After that she was absent from the screen for four years while caring for her
mother who was dying of cancer. Hawn's mother died in 1994. Fianlly in 1996, Hawn appeared back on the screen playing an aging alcoholic actress in the comedy The First Wives Club, with Diane Keaton and Bette Midler. Hawn teamed up again with Steve Martin in 1996 in the comedy The Out-of-Towners, a remake of the 1970 Neil Simon hit, although it bombed at the box office. Goldie's last film appearance was in 2002 with the big hit The Banger Sisters, where she starred opposite of Susan Sarandon.
Personal Life
Goldie married actor/director Gus Trikonis in 1969. The couple divorced in 1974. One year later, she married musician Bill Hudson. The couple had their first child, Oliver, on September 7, 1976. Their second child, Kate, was born April 19, 1979. Goldie and Bill's marriage ended in divorce in 1980.
In 1983, Goldie began her relationship with actor Kurt Russell. Kurt was in the middle of of his divorce from his first wife when he and Hawn connected. On July 10, 1986, Goldie and Kurt had a son together. Hawn considers Russells's son, Boston, from his first wife to be her stepson. Although, Oliver and Kate Hudson have a father, Bill, they consider Kurt to be their father. On January 7, 2004, Goldie became a grandmother, when daughter Kate had a son, Ryder Russell Robinson. She also became a grandmother for the second time on August 23, 2007, when her son, Oliver and his wife had a son, Wilder Brooks Hudson.
