He is considered to be one of the finest mimes and clowns caught on film and his influence on performers in both fields is great.

Chaplin was one of the most creative and influential personalities in the silent film era: he acted in, directed, scripted, produced, and eventually even scored his own films. His working life in entertainment spanned over 70 years, from the British Victorian stage and music hall in England as a child performer, almost until his death at the age of 88. He led one of the most remarkable and colorful lives of the 20th century, from a Dickensian London childhood to the pinnacle of world fame in the film industry and as a cultural icon.

His principal character was "The Tramp" (known as "Charlot" in France and Spain): a vagrant with the refined manners and dignity of a gentleman who wears a tight coat, oversized trousers and shoes, a bowler hat, carries a bamboo cane, and has a signature toothbrush moustache. Chaplin's high-profile public and private life encompassed highs and lows of both adulation and controversy.

In 1999, the American Film Institute named Chaplin among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time, ranking at No. 10.

There is so much to say about him, yet at the same time it's difficult. I could go on for hours about why I love him, but I'll simply say that he was amazing in everything he did. It sums it up quite nicely.

His work serves as a blueprint for not only progress in modern film-making but progress in modern society as well. Over 70 years on his ideas have proven to stand the test of time. His films are based on simplistic philosophies that get confused and screwed around in an overly complex world. To watch The Kid we know what it feels like to be a parent and guardian. To watch Limelight we know that it's possible to redeem our worth to not only others but ourselves. To watch Modern Times we know that our pursuit of infinite technology has and will continue to make us cynical and jaded robots.

The Tramp was more than a bowler and dancing cane. He is all of us as he meanders his way through life impacting strangers in extraordinary ways. Of all the artists to be celebrated in the 20th century, Chaplin will undoubtedly go down in history as a genious, a romantic, a poet and most importantly a clown because Charlie Chaplin was and is a prophet of laughter.

I've never heard anyone say a bad word about this man. Who can? His tireless work ethic made him top of his game. Any actor out there must admit that some part of what they do is inspired by Charlie. He was truly tuned in to what the audience of the day wanted (and needed) to see. But his work remains timeless to this day. He is truly the silent voice and image of a generation.
